D.C. voters! Help me earn a spot in the June 16 primary by completing a line on the linked petition form attached. We're making a final push to collect signatures by end-of-day on Tues March 17. It's a hacked-together method, but DC BOE confirmed it works. bit.ly/SignForGordon

Metro was a dysfunctional mess during the 2010s. It's easy to get depressed with the state of the country, but Randy Clarke's successful efforts to turn the system around are proof that things can, in fact, get better.

Of nerdy urbanist interest: Next week the D.C. Council will cast a first vote on @BrianneKNadeau's bill to allow for new D.C. buildings up to six stories tall to have only a single stairwell in them, instead of the current two. Proponents say it creates more residential space.

Rep. Perry has tried for the last five years to end DC’s use of the same automated traffic enforcement measures his state of PA employs, to the benefit of his own constituents. He should focus on banning PA’s use of the technology that has sparked his sustained animus before attacking the use of it in DC, a district he does not represent.

Veronica Hegens thought she’d made a sound financial decision in September 2023 by renting out her row house in Southwest D.C. Now the retired Army major is in danger of losing the property to foreclosure because of a tenant who hasn’t paid rent since October and who also has no immediate plans to leave. bit.ly/4bfbEC6

Solid turnout at the Wilson Building of child care providers, advocates, and parents protesting @MayorBowser’s decision to impose a wait list on D.C.’s child care subsidy program in order to contain costs. It goes into effect on May 12.

NEWS: D.C. says that starting on May 12 it will implement a wait list for the child care subsidy program, which currently helps 7,500 kids from low-income families pay for child care. City officials say without it, enrollment growth will blow the program's $96 million budget.

The Council sent a letter to the Hill expressing strong opposition to HR 5242. This bill would erode recent advances in traffic safety and put residents and visitors at risk. It will inevitably lead to more speeding, more dangerous driving, and more serious injuries on our roads.

Big rally of childcare advocates, including teachers and parents, at the Wilson Building today. They’re protesting the childcare subsidy wait list and other cuts expected for ECE programs. And very notable signs supporting the business activity tax to fund childcare…

Speaking as a candidate who didn't collect enough signatures... Every candidate who does the hard work of trying to get on the ballot deserves to be on the ballot. If you don't like a candidate, rank them last on the ballot.

We can’t believe it either. We have just 1 day left to collect signatures to get on the ballot for DC’s Mayoral Race. Can you share this post with your community? It’s go time! riniformayor.com/sign-the-petit…

The Safeway in Hechinger Mall just announced that it's closing. This is a property that's on a trajectory from underused to derelict. Upzone Hechinger Mall to the sky. Create the incentive to redevelop the site and bring jobs and retail to a pocket of DC that needs growth

This week is the moment of truth for D.C. campaigns: The deadline for candidates to submit petitions with signatures from voters to get on the ballot is Wednesday afternoon. Anyone who doesn't get those petitions in won't make the cut for the June 16 primary.

THANK YOU to @DDOTDC for placing barriers and a planter to stop auto entry from R Street NE onto the Metropolitan Branch Trail. This has been long requested by the community and many thanks to @EckingtonCivic @NoMaBID @CMZParker5 @CMCharlesAllen who helped make it happen!

We again ask @DDOTDC : please install hardened bollards at R Street and the MBT, and reposition the planters at Randolph St and S Street NE to prevent auto entry. Can we add these to the queue, @311DCgov ? Needs to happen before someone is injured (or worse).

No, that's not a typo; 20% of people in DC hold 54% of the wealth. And much of the economic inequality in DC is driven by racial disparities. We break it all down in our latest report, The State of Working DC. Find it at loom.ly/8j1UpYM

In short, the death of D.C.'s streetcar is a story of the political and fiscal complexities of making big and expensive plans over long periods of time, but also many small screw-ups along the way that chipped away at excitement and political capital for the streetcar network.
