In 2022, we began a project with an ambitious goal- simulate the effects of climate change in the cloud forest by removing epiphytes from entire trees. I am so excited to see this, our first product, in print! It sure took a village! sciencedirect.com/science/articl… @UKAgriculture

My students in Tree Biology are learning about wood structure and function. This white oak core shows large, early-season vessels that move more water when it is abundant and late-season vessels (tiny) that move less water but withstand drought. @UKAgriculture #forestry

PNAS reporter @amygmcdermott traveled to #CostaRica to investigate the impact of #ClimateChange on the vital #rainforest water cycle, focusing on how drying affects ferns, orchids, and other #CanopyPlants. Check out the news feature and short film here ow.ly/89NI50T51Qg

"Fieldwork and experiments over the last 10 years show that #epiphytes in rainforests worldwide will be the first plants to die in a hotter, less-predictable climate—the very same plants that play an outsized role in keeping the rainforest wet...." Awesome work 🤩👏 @GotschSybil

Climate change is drying out canopy plants—that could mean less water for the entire rainforest | PNAS pnas.org/doi/full/10.10…

It was great to participate in this multimedia project for the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences! The cloud forest is a critical ecosystem for hydrology and biodiversity but doesn't nearly get the press it deserves. @UKAgriculture @NSF pnas.org/post/multimedi…

After a year and four months of discussions, prepping, collecting pilot data, and constructing preliminary models, I am happy to say, proposal submitted! Fingers crossed. Back to the trees.

And now we have begun a photosynthesis campaign. So curious to see how these cloud forest trees will respond to the loss of epiphytes. Check out the climber in the upper left. @UKAgriculture
