When a child can't live with their parents, extended family often steps in. New Mexico’s Kinship Caregiver Pilot Program — launched in November 2025 in Rio Arriba and San Juan Counties — is now helping 71 families with $500 a month so they can focus on the kids, not the bills. Expansion to Taos County is coming. #NMKids #KinshipCare #FamilySupport

New Mexico is making serious progress on child poverty — and the numbers prove it. According to the latest U.S. Census data, New Mexico made the biggest strides in the nation in reducing child poverty rates thanks to universal healthy free lunches, universal child care, and more. And we're not done yet! #NMKids #NewMexico

What an honor to join Marie Claire magazine’s 2026 list of "Power Moms” making a difference for women and children! When we empower women by helping them with child care everyone wins — young children get the attention and early education they need and deserve, moms can choose to return to the workforce or continue their education and our economy gets stronger. Thanks to Mika and my friends at Morning Joe for highlighting New Mexico’s universal child care initiative and the collaboration by Marie Claire and Power Moms that honor hardworking women who contribute so much to our society. Winter's not done with us yet, New Mexico. Late-season snow returns to the northern mountains late today through Friday. Expect 4–14" of heavy, wet snow — mainly above 9,000 feet — with the Sangre de Cristos taking the brunt of it. If you're planning a trip into the high country this week, check conditions before you go. Wintry travel is back. #NewMexico #NMwx #SangresDeCristos

Thanks to ABC News and Linsey Davis for having me on to discuss New Mexico’s historic universal child care program. Our state was the first to launch no-cost child care, but I hope we won’t be the last. If American policy makers truly want to tackle the stubborn affordability challenge and give children and families a better chance at success, child care is the place to start. #UniversalChildCare #ParentingSupport #NewMexico

Three years ago, just over a third of New Mexico students could read at grade level. Now we're approaching half and climbing. That’s because we invested in the science of reading, trained our teachers, and made sure every child has a shot at learning to read no matter what. This summer, we're keeping that momentum going. New Mexico's Summer Reading Program is free, for incoming kindergarteners to outgoing eighth graders. Small groups and trained literacy instructors can make a huge difference in your child’s reading skills. Don’t wait to get them signed up! A third-tier Republican candidate for governor — who lives in Arizona — is using a frivolous lawsuit in a despicable attempt to mislead New Mexico families and generate headlines for a campaign that is going nowhere. Universal child care is in effect and it is NOT being shut down, despite what this desperate candidate claims. The court did not order us to end the program, and this losing candidate is purposely sowing confusion and mistrust. The court said the state has an opportunity to respond before any action is taken, which is standard legal protocol. We will respond and we will prevail. The New Mexico Legislature already settled the underlying legal question when it passed Senate Bill 241, which provided both the funding and the authorization for this program. New Mexicans should know this: A man who wants to lead our state made a calculated decision to scare working families — parents who depend on child care to hold down jobs, pay their bills, and build a future here — because he is losing and he knows it. This is not the leadership New Mexicans want — it is desperation by a third-tier losing candidate who lives in Arizona.

When the Tusas Fire broke out on April 22, the Northern New Mexico Type 3 Incident Management Team sprung into action to protect property and evacuate residents. They also made sure our four-legged friends got home safe. Lost goats inside the fire perimeter? Not on their watch. As a goat owner myself, this hits close to home. These animals are family. Big thanks to the Northern New Mexico Type 3 Team and the surrounding communities for showing up for every living thing in harm's way. As child poverty surged across the U.S. — jumping from 5% to 13% since 2021 — New Mexico went the other direction. Tax credits, rebates, and smart anti-poverty investments cut our child poverty rate by 19 percentage points between 2022 and 2024. When the federal government pulled back — letting the Child Tax Credit lapse, cutting SNAP and Medicaid — New Mexico held the line for its kids. And it’s changing lives across the state. the74million.org/zero2eight/wit…

The deadline for the NMSP Youth Academy is May 3. Don't let it pass. Communities across New Mexico need the next generation of law enforcement. This is where that journey can start. This is a free, one-week program that gives New Mexico young people ages 16-18 a real look at law enforcement — and they come home with something bigger: confidence, leadership, and skills that last a lifetime. The academy runs July 19-25 at the NM Law Enforcement Academy in Santa Fe. If you're ready to step up, apply now. joinnmsp.com/youth-academy/

Our elders carry the memory, wisdom, and culture of our communities. They deserve to be protected. Across New Mexico, trusted partners are making sure aging adults have access to the legal services they need — from protecting their rights and securing benefits to navigating housing and healthcare. Organizations like New Mexico Legal Aid, the Senior Citizens Law Office, and Legal Resources for the Elderly Program are on the ground, providing guidance and representation across our state. I’m relieved that President Trump, the First Lady, Vice President Vance, and everyone in attendance at the White House Correspondents Dinner tonight are safe, according to news reports. No one should face the threat of violence at a gathering to celebrate a free press — a cornerstone of American democracy that belongs to all of us, regardless of party. Any act of violence at an event honoring those freedoms is an affront to what this country stands for. We are grateful for the swift action of the Secret Service and security personnel who responded to protect everyone in that room. New Mexico stands with the free press. And we stand against political violence.

The deadline to apply is April 30. That's FIVE days away! New Mexico's Native youth have something to say. The Indigenous Youth Council is how they say it. The IYC represents Indigenous youth across our state on the issues that matter most to them and their communities. Members engage with local government, lead projects, and attend a Youth Summit. This is real leadership experience. If you're a Native American high school student in New Mexico, this is your seat at the table. Apply now: iad.nm.gov/programs/indig… #NativeAmericanYouth #NativeLeadership #YouthCouncil

Anyone who knows me knows I have a soft spot for animals. I have goats, dogs, a cat, and way too many chickens. News like this makes my day. The NM Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum in Las Cruces is in the middle of lambing season. Six lambs and counting, with Debouillet and Navajo-Churro ewes delivering — many of them twins. If you're looking for a reason to visit one of our great state museums, this is it. #NewMexicoMuseums #LambingSeason #FarmAnimals

If you had to evacuate today, what would you grab? Wildfires move fast and don't follow a schedule. When the order comes, you may have minutes to evacuate. Start with the basics: - Medications - Documents - Pet supplies - A change of clothes Preparation time now could be the most important time you spend for you and your family. #WildfireSafety #FamilyPreparedness #EmergencyKit

Today is Arbor Day — and in New Mexico, planting trees is more urgent than ever. Wildfires have burned 7 million acres across our state since 2000. The Hermit's Peak-Calf Canyon Fire alone — the largest in state history — needs 17.6 million seedlings to recover. At current rates, that would take 50 years. We can't wait 50 years. That's why we helped stand up the New Mexico Reforestation Center — a partnership between the state Forestry Division, UNM, NMSU, and NM Highlands University. They're breaking ground on a 155,000 square foot greenhouse facility that will more than triple our seedling production capacity, growing native trees adapted to a hotter, drier future. Replanting our forests protects our hillsides, our watersheds, and our communities downstream. That's what Arbor Day means in New Mexico. #ArborDay #Reforestation #NMForestry
