Excited to see my friend Roger Zakheim’s new book, Peace Through Strength: How Reagan’s Military Buildup Won the Cold War, coming out this November. Roger has spent much of his career working on national security and helping carry forward the legacy of @RonaldReagan at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute. Looking forward to reading it. Congratulations, Roger!

Saddened to hear of the passing of Sonny Jurgensen, one of the greatest Washington Redskins to ever play the game. I remember watching Sonny at RFK Stadium as a kid, and later listening to him on the radio with Sam Huff. A Pro Football Hall of Famer and a legend in the Washington community, he will be sorely missed.

I care deeply about the state of Maryland, and I remain concerned about the direction of our nation’s politics, but I have no intention of running for office again. It was an honor to serve, but it’s time to look forward, not back. The fight for Maryland and America’s future does not belong to any one person or any one party; it belongs to the people. baltimoresun.com/2026/01/20/lar…

It’s the end of an era in Baltimore. John Harbaugh is a great coach and an even better man. For 18 seasons, he led the @Ravens with integrity, toughness, and a true commitment to excellence. He built a winning culture, represented the city with pride, and left a legacy that goes far beyond wins and losses. We’re grateful for everything he gave to Baltimore and the Ravens, and wish John and his family nothing but the very best in their next chapter.

Yumi and I are praying for these brave Guardsmen, for their families, and for everyone affected by this horrific incident near the White House. Violence against our National Guard and law enforcement is vile and cowardly. We are grateful for the quick actions of the emergency personnel who responded earlier today and for all those now caring for the injured. washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2025/…

Thankfully, the longest government shutdown in history has finally come to an end. I applaud the Democrats in both the Senate and the House who had the courage to reach across the aisle and end the stalemate in a bipartisan, commonsense way. Sadly, that same courage was missing in Maryland. Every Democrat elected from our state continually voted to keep the government shut down. And when given a chance to support a compromise, Governor Wes Moore remained on the partisan sidelines until the vote was already over – choosing silence over substance. As President Kennedy said, “sometimes party loyalty asks too much.” During my eight years as Governor, I served under both Democratic and Republican presidents. Despite criticism from my own party, I worked with Presidents Obama and Biden when they were right, and stood up to President Trump when he was wrong. That’s what leadership requires: putting principle before politics. When Washington last shut down, I was one of the few Republicans willing to call out the chaos and urge both sides to find common ground. Maryland has one of the highest percentages of federal workers in the nation. Playing politics while our neighbors missed paychecks is unconscionable. I share Democratic concerns about rising healthcare costs, especially for the poor and middle class. During my administration, we worked across party lines to expand coverage and cut premium costs by more than 30%. But that discussion, now, can’t come at the expense of our troops, our ability to fly safely, or families relying on SNAP. Both parties bear responsibility for Washington’s dysfunction, and it’s troubling to see the same toxic politics has infected Annapolis. Marylanders expect action, not ambition. Our state is watching. It’s time for our elected officials to get off cable news and do their jobs.

It should never take over forty days to do the right thing. While I commend the eight Senate Democrats who crossed party lines to break the deadlock and re-open the government, as I said during the 2019 shutdown, holding the government hostage for partisan reasons is “absurd and ridiculous.” At the time, I said Congress and the President were acting like “a bunch of two-year-olds.” Five years later, Washington hasn’t changed. Democrats and Republicans are both to blame. This is a problem with the toxic politics of Washington D.C. Both parties have lost touch with what real people expect. Hurting our troops, cancelling flights, and defunding SNAP all to score political points is outrageous. We need stability, competence, and a government that can function without a crisis every few months. The loudest and most extreme voices continue to dominate the conversation, while the rest of the country pays the price. Enough of the performative politics. Stop racing to be the first on cable news and start doing your jobs. The American people deserve better.

Redistricting should never be used as a political weapon. While party leaders may pressure blue and red states alike to become pawns in a political arms race, the governor should not disenfranchise Marylanders to serve his national ambitions. Maryland’s leadership must be defined by integrity and lead by example. Read my full statement:

I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Delegate Charles Otto. Charles cared deeply about the Eastern Shore, about Maryland’s farmers, and about the people he served. He never sought the spotlight, but he earned the respect and admiration of everyone who worked alongside him. In Annapolis, Charles brought common sense, civility, and integrity to every discussion, qualities that are far too rare in politics today. Whether it was fighting for rural communities, supporting Maryland’s agriculture, or working across the aisle to get things done, Charles always put his constituents first. He embodied the very best of public service and the very best of the Shore. Yumi and I extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and all who had the privilege to know him. wboc.com/news/breaking-…

The attack on Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk in Utah is horrific and senseless. Please join me in praying for Charlie and his family. There can be absolutely no place for political violence in America.

As governor, I called gerrymandering a cancer on our democracy. I still believe that it is. It corrodes trust in government and pushes both parties further toward the fringes. It is one of the root causes of the toxic gridlock in Washington. And it has to end. baltimoresun.com/2025/08/07/lar…

For eight years, we proved that it’s possible to cut taxes, tolls, and fees by $4.7 billion, provide record funding for education, law enforcement, and transportation, all while turning the largest deficit ever inherited into a record $5.5 billion surplus. We didn’t just restore fiscal responsibility to Annapolis, we left Maryland in the strongest financial position in history.

On this day in 2015, five months after being sworn in as governor, I heard my doctor say the words that changed my life. “Governor, I'm afraid we have some very difficult news to share with you.” And with those words, I was diagnosed with an advanced and aggressive cancer which had already spread rapidly throughout my body. Ten years later, I am grateful to say that I am still 100% cancer-free.

The attacks on public servants in Minnesota are shocking, and I condemn them in the strongest possible terms. Political violence is becoming far too common in America, and that cannot continue. All Americans should stand together in condemning these heinous acts. I pray for the victims and their families, and I will continue doing everything I can to help our nation return to civility, decency, and peace.

Not here. Not now. Not ever again. There is no room for ambiguity. These were targeted attacks on Jews in America, and they demand a clear, unflinching response. This moment demands moral clarity. Not hedging, not relativism, and certainly not silence. baltimoresun.com/2025/06/04/lar…

I’m both heartbroken and outraged by the horrific murders of two Israeli embassy staffers at the DC Jewish museum by a radical anti-Semite. As we mourn the victims and pray for their families, we must come together to confront the evil of antisemitism wherever it appears. I stand in full solidarity with our Jewish neighbors and offer my deepest condolences and my unwavering support in this fight.
