@Peterhardwick17 @DarrenJohnson66 Yes, and it turned out that the Bishop (Mervyn Stockwood) had been a speaker at John Cleese's public school when Cleese was there, which enabled him to deliver the line; "You weren't paying attention, were you?"

@DarrenJohnson66 Malcolm Muggeridge & some Bishop went to watch it at the invitation of BBC. They called it blasphemous on TV because of its “portrayal” of Christ. Turned out that they’d gone to dinner beforehand, got a bit drunk & missed the 1st 15 minutes which showed Brian was not Jesus……

I went to see Life of Brian with my dad when it came out. We couldn't go to see it at our local cinema in Preston because it was banned so had to travel to Southport and there were Christians outside marching up and down the street trying to persuade people not to go in.
Muscular Englishness@MuscularEnglish

Also correct me for this but when Life of Brian came out Christians didn't go off their rockers and call John Cleese a "Christophobe" Muslims need to learn that mockery, criticism and questions or comments they don't like are part of living in the West. They're not special. They're just one group with one ideology that is as open to scrutiny, mockery and scrutiny as any other.

@SirPeter64 @FXMC1957 I would prefer not to go into that subject because I would have to make assertions that I can't substantiate. Let's just say though that whether by accident or design, the Tories in 1979 found the one weapon that the unions couldn't counter - skyrocketing unemployment.

@GrahamGiles7 @FXMC1957 He wasn't a salesman or visionary. Trying to control union power is not a game for the Labour Party. God's gift to the Tories. Who could claim to be able to play the game better. And probably did.

26 March 2005. James Callaghan, Labour Prime Minister (1976-1979), died (aged 92). He’s the only British politician to have served in the 4 leading offices of the UK state: Foreign Secretary, Home Secretary, Chancellor of the Exchequer and Prime Minister.

@SirPeter64 @FXMC1957 You never saw him without a collar and tie - today's relaxed "Call Me Dave", open collar stye of politics would have been anathema to him. He was also popular in Plymouth because, as an ex naval man himself, he always made sure the Navy was looked after.

@SirPeter64 @FXMC1957 He was too pro-union for the Tories - remember, it was largely down to him that Barbara Castle's In Place Of Strife bill got scuppered in 1969. Nevertheless, he was definitely conservative in a lot of ways.

@SueSuezep And all the millions who put them there. Let's not forget that. Trump might be an ass, but 70 million Americans still thought he was the right person to lead the country. The same with Netanyahu (Russia isn't a full democracy so they're excused).

@teamjohntee @Elizabe13014545 I think you wouldn't like the results of that if it ever happened. You'd have to deal again with people who were sacked because they were too incompetent to do the job. Guess what? They haven't gotten any better.

@Elizabe13014545 Sick of these lazy asses...expecting us tax payers to pay when they've just sat on their backsides and got handouts. Time to stop ALL universal credit...force them all to work. Guarantee UK will top the tables of richest country and most productive if we do.

I worked for 32 years but when I retired you needed 40 years for a full pension so I did not qualify. Now a person who has never worked but has 35 years of credits through benefits will get a full state pension.

@SalisburyPlain_ @JennyAThatcher IMO, people are in pain and seeking release from that pain. I used to have to put up with an older boy at school kicking me in school assembly for no obvious reason. That boy had himself been bullied and, not knowing any better, was probably just passing on his own pain

@JennyAThatcher It’s a balance between understanding the motivations of why someone did x, y, & z, incl. why they wld use me (even though I have insight but I’d like a definite explanation), & ensuring I'm not consumed by victimhood. Altho it cld just come down to the fact that they’re awful.

@coachkatykat In my experience, it works if you're attractive enough that the other person WANTS to keep chasing you (and not otherwise).

Hard to Get… Does It WORK? “Play hard to get.” We’ve all heard the advice, but psychology shows it’s not about manipulation — it’s about uncertainty and perceived value. When someone isn’t completely predictable, the brain keeps thinking about them, which can increase attraction. But push it too far and people simply walk away. The sweet spot? A little mystery paired with genuine interest.

@BrianKennedy51 @StatisticUrban Yes, except that we don't seem to know what it means in English either (although I can't get into the OED website any more to prove it). It's usually translated as simple boredom, but it's not boredom as we usually understand it.

Maybe I'm just ignorant, but despite looking, I've still never found a true example of a word/idea that cannot be translated into English. The English version may take multiple words, or even a sentence. It may lose its poetry. But it can be translated all the same.
