The Health and Disability Green paper will deliver tiny income gains at the cost of major losses for those with health problems or a disability. Plans to save £5 billion by restricting PIP qualification would mean between 800,000 & 1.2 million people losing support of between £4,200 & £6,300 per year by 2029-30.

Cuts to benefits announced today have clearly been motivated by a desire to make short-term savings to meet arbitrary fiscal rules. They're not going to help ill and disabled people, they're only going to create more problems. @PollardTom reacts to Liz Kendall's speech

Cuts that rob disabled people of a dignified life are not a moral choice. These would be unprecedented disability benefit cuts that drive up hardship. A govt that vowed to end the moral scar of food bank use should not be leaving disabled people at greater risk of needing one.

📢New @jrf_uk analysis There is no way to cut £5bn from PIP without affecting people with problems feeding and clothing themselves or getting around everyday A govt that vowed to end the 'moral scar' of foodbank use shouldn't leave disabled people at greater risk of needing one
Peter Matejic@StatsPeter

@jrf_uk has analysed caseload data and can see much of the forecast growth in PIP spending is directed at people with significant difficulties across a range of areas. Over half of the growth in spending is from people in receipt of the higher rate in both PIP elements.

Steve, one of our experts by experience, spoke to @BBCNews about the cruel and short-termist disability benefit cuts expected to be proposed today. "My life is already at below minimal quality - that will reduce further and health will suffer first". bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

Rather than make rushed cuts to welfare spending, there are plausible options to raise tax even with major tax increases off the table. A 2-year freeze extension to Income Tax and National Insurance thresholds would be broadly progressive – except for the highest-income households – & raise around £8bn.

This, from a DWP press release yesterday (gov.uk/government/new…), is outrageous In two short paragraphs it peddles multiple falsehoods about the current system that will be used to justify upcoming cuts & changes Here's what MPs & journalists should be challenging... 🧵

If this is correct, it will increase poverty & make it harder to live independently “Cost-cutting reforms due to be announced next week are set to deny payments to many people with mental health conditions and those who struggle with washing, dressing themselves and eating”
Peter Matejic@StatsPeter

The Times today: £5bn/1m = £5,000/disabled person, i.e. greater than 3 of 4 PIP rates. Unless 1 of 2 numbers in headline is wrong, this has to take money away from severely disabled people on PIP higher rate, as lower rate recipients don't get £5,000/yr. Obscene to consider this!

🏠 Without PIP, 700,000 more disabled households could be pushed into poverty. Cutting this or other disability benefits would increase hardship for some of the poorest in society - something morally indefensible. Read the letter in full here: scope.org.uk/campaigns/open… 3/3

Slashing benefits to meet an arbitrary fiscal target would be unethical, short sighted and illogical. ❌ 2 in 5 people receiving disability benefits already experience hardship – meaning they are either unable to afford enough food, heat their home or pay household bills. 1/3

As I said to @BBCBreakfast government *isn’t* proposing reform. It’s cuts. The @DWPgovuk has a genuine plan for reform to help more people get support, healthcare & work when they can. @hmtreasury driving the opposite. Cruel & counterproductive cuts for short term savings.

The government is reportedly planning at least £6 billion a year in cuts to benefits for people with a disability or long-term health condition. These cuts risk pushing people already experiencing hardship and ill health even closer to the brink. 🔽 1/2

Contrary to the myth that seems to be flying around at the moment, claiming disability benefits is not an easy process that anyone who's "a bit stressed" can do. @PollardTom sets the record straight on @TimesRadio
