In 2016 MIT Press published The Stack: On Software and Sovereignty by @bratton, a book that mapped the emergence of planetary computation and imagined the next decade. It established a new kind of philosophy of technology—integrating computer science, design, and cultural theory. From chip wars to culture wars, from Carl Schmitt to cybernetics, from platforms becoming state-scale actors to states evolving into cloud platforms, from cities as software substrates to interfaces as models of reality, from addressable and tokenizable everything to the cohabitation of human and non-human users, the book showed how all these dizzying transformations actually add up to a new totality: an accidental megastructure we call The Stack. Join Antikythera for an exclusive public lecture and book signing at Gray Area to celebrate the 10th anniversary paperback edition of the book. Bratton will revisit the six layers of The Stack—Earth, Cloud, City, Address, Interface and User—and will provide a glimpse into the next decade of their development. Marek Poliks, the co-author of Exocapitalism, will introduce the author and host a Q&A. Register at link.antikythera.org/the-stack-deca…

𝐀𝐍𝐍𝐎𝐔𝐍𝐂𝐈𝐍𝐆: Wolf Boxuan Chen as the 2026 recipient of the Gray Area Zachary Watson Memorial Education Fellowship. Given annually on Pi Day in memory of creative coder Zachary Watson, the fellowship offers a emerging artist or creative technologist free access to Gray Area workshops and intensives, plus a honorary scholarship to the Artist Incubator. A San Francisco-based artist, Wolf Boxuan Chen performs inside game engines, building unstable digital worlds shaped by improvisation, desire, and adaptation. Through the fellowship, they’ll continue expanding that practice with mentorship, coursework, and support to build new work. They are especially excited to transform a beat-up dance mat into a digital world where they can perform entirely on their own terms. Featured here is "We Live In That Bright One Second" (Game Simulation, 2025). As Wolf describes it, “In a room synchronized to real time, a sleeper remains anchored in a heavy rest while a relentless firework rages outside, until a stray breaks through and ignites the sleeper into the very chaos that once besieged them. Even in the depths of sleep, we are colonized by the external hum of a world that refuses to pause.”

𝐖𝐈𝐋𝐋𝐈𝐀𝐌 𝐁𝐀𝐒𝐈𝐍𝐒𝐊𝐈 with Kelly Moran On April 30, William Basinski brings his signature approach to experimental music to Gray Area. Using obsolete technology and analog tape loops, Basinski creates haunting, slow-moving soundscapes that linger on memory, impermanence, and the passage of time. Joined by Kelly Moran, whose experimental piano compositions move between hypnotic texture and emotional intensity. THIS FRIDAY: 𝐀𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐚 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐲 — a walk through *The Endless Forest* In advance of GDC week, Auriea Harvey is back at Gray Area for a one-night walkthrough of The Endless Forest, her long-running online world made with Michael Samyn (Tale of Tales). The Endless Forest is a multiplayer game and “social screensaver” with no goals and no competition. You enter as a deer. Everyone else is a deer too. You meet in an infinitely generated forest and communicate through sound and body language. Over 20 years online, it’s grown a deep archive of lore, hidden details, and quiet rituals shared by a devoted community. Harvey will walk through the work with Gray Area Associate Curator Wade Wallerstein, tracing how The Endless Forest has evolved, what it makes possible as an artwork, and what’s stayed mysterious after two decades. Stick around after the talk for a cocktail mixer. Friday, March 6, 2026 Doors: 6 PM Gray Area / Grand Theater RSVP: grayarea.org/event/auriea-h…

A trillion web pages is more than a number; it’s a record of how we’ve lived online. 🌐 The @InternetArchive x @GrayAreaOrg Trillionth Webpage Commissions invited artists to work from the Archive’s vast collections, exploring what it means to preserve and create culture online. Rodell Warner’s "Ghosts of the Internet Archive" creates generative “ghosts” from Web 1.0 blog fragments, layering lost materials into new connections that spark unexpected meanings. Long Now Foundation@longnow

𝘞𝘩𝘰𝘭𝘦 𝘌𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘩 𝘙𝘦𝘥𝘶𝘹 has arrived. A collection of original essays offering new perspectives on one of the counterculture’s most influential publications. Congratulations to @GrayAreaorg on this beautiful new volume, we couldn’t be more excited to share it! This publication follows the triumphant 02023 launch of the Whole Earth Index (na2.hubs.ly/H03LTzb0), which made the complete Whole Earth Catalog accessible online for the first time. 𝘞𝘩𝘰𝘭𝘦 𝘌𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘩 𝘙𝘦𝘥𝘶𝘹 extends that legacy, excavating the Catalog’s deeper histories, exploring its relevance now, and imagining the futures it still invites us to build. So honored to support this work alongside @internetarchive and see essential cultural tools kept alive.
