The religion that developed after the return from Babylon, what eventually became known as Judeanism (Judaism), slowly shifted from looking forward to the promised messiah to making the ethnic group and the traditions themselves the center of everything. By the time Christ showed up, a lot of them had replaced faith in the coming seed with faith in their own identity and rituals. That's why Jesus kept saying they searched the scriptures thinking they had eternal life, but those scriptures were actually pointing to Him, and they refused to come to Him. So when people today casually call Abraham or Moses “Jews” or practicing “Judeanism/Judaism”, they're not just being historically sloppy. They're missing the entire theological point of the New Testament. The Old Testament saints were looking for Christ. The religious leaders in Jesus' day had largely stopped doing that. They had turned their identity into an idol. And now professing Christians believe the same thing as the Christ-rejecting 1st century Judeans: they see the Old Testament as being about Jews and not Christ.
