This guy is like "I'd be happy to pay high taxes if the government used it wisely", "politicians need to be held accountable for how they spend public money", "social welfare is too high" But he still fundamentally *doesn't get it* The whole reason we have - private property - firms that can make a profit if they do well, or go bankrupt if they do badly - personal finances and salaries rather than communism is because it's hard to hold governments accountable. Government is bad by nature and it should be minimized. There's no such thing as a well-run, large state. A well-run state is a small state that gets out of the way and lets other mechanisms with greater accountability do the work.

True, but most of that, as you mentioned, comes purely from the government, and the majority of people disagree with it. I’m from Bandar Abbas; we have a large Sunni population there that, culturally, is treated like everyone else, though the government deprives them of some rights. Although I have to say, the regime oppresses every group in some way. Women don’t have proper legal rights, from clothing restrictions to the requirement for a male “guardian” for important legal actions. Men are required to serve the mullahs for two years (called mandatory military service, but it’s basically legalized slavery). Kurds, Arabs, Azeris, Turks, gays, trans people, Christians, etc., etc.

However, we can’t deny that antisemitism and chauvinism are present in segments of Iranian government including the society. They’re connected to each other, as everything depends on the government’s agenda. Azerbaijani Turks are being oppressed culturally in Iran, they’re denied the opportunity to receive education in their own language, and authorities restrict the use of Turkic origin names. Sunnis in Iran aren’t able to practice their religion freely or openly. Sunnis haven’t been granted permits to build formal Sunni mosque building in Tehran, for example.

The majority of people are not brainwashed by the regime; they see it as the complete opposite of their identity. In Germany, the Nazi regime appealed to nationalism and the identity of the German people and capitalized on that. The Islamic regime in Iran, however, went in the opposite direction, trying to erase the national pre-Islamic, pre-revolution identity of Iranians. That has backfired immensely, to the point that, as you saw, millions of people took to the streets in January. It’ll be okay. Bear with us, ignore the extremes.

I hope, one day it will come. For Germans, it took a long time to recover, yet the Nazi regime lasted only 12 years. I don’t know how long it will take for Iranians, considering 47 years under a barbaric regime. Again I’m talking about the majority, not the exceptions. In Germany, there were exceptions as well (I mean not brainwashed by the regime people).
