For the Food Waste Challenge, Alpha Brewing created a delicious Jalapeño Taco Slaw. They pickled onions near the end of their shelf life, using their own sour beer brine. Join us at Urban Chestnut (in the Grove) on Friday to celebrate Food Waste Awareness Day w/area participants!

Wow! 25 GDA members composted 70,109 lbs of food waste in September, the CO2 equivalent of keeping 7.5 cars off the road! GDA Grant Rebate Program participants get support from Total Organics Recycling and New Earth Farm STL, and a $20/month rebate on their composting bill.

Pizza Head on S. Grand is rolling out some smart moves for the St. Louis Food Waste Challenge this month. The GDA-certified pizza joint creates new menu items with surplus food, donates excess slices to STL Food Shares, and has a new food truck event waste reduction policy! 🤗🍕

Hooray: @OldBakeryBeer in Alton is totally up for the St. Louis Food Waste Challenge! This GDA-certified craft brewery and restaurant repurposes extra ingredients in soups -- and is right-sizing side items, such as fries, to cut food waste.

@MissionTacoSTL, a GDA-certified eatery, is taking part in the October STL Food Waste Challenge by training staff on waste-saving food prep techniques, using day-old tortillas for chips, putting up signage, and adding food waste policies to their employee handbook!

GDA-certified restaurant Flavor360 (@Chef_Kara) donates surplus food to those in need. And, for the STL Food Waste Challenge, they're adding a food waste policy section to their employee handbook, among other green initiatives! You rock, Flavor360!

A toast to @urbanchestnut in @thegrovestl on GDA recertification! UCBC diverts around a million pounds of spent grains and hops per year to local farmers for animal feed. LED lighting and Energy Star rated equipment cuts energy use, and solar panels supply it.

We're overjoyed that @Juicemasters has been recertified by the GDA! They serve fresh-squeezed juices and fruit smoothies, locally sourcing produce such as apples and wheat grass, and keeping scraps out of landfills by composting them (or feeding them to the chickens!).

In August, 25 participating GDA members composted 66,015 pounds of food waste thanks to our Grant Rebate Program and composting partners Total Organics Recycling and New Earth Farm STL. Keeping that much food out of landfills is like taking 7 vehicles off the road!
