@SenAngusKing If it is ILLEGAL, maybe you can get a senator to do something about it...

Pulling $62M in congressionally-appropriated funding out from under the rug for Maine's 'Solar For All' program will ramp up energy costs for low-income Maine people and set us back in our goal for a more sustainable future. It's illegal, dumb and harmful.

@jamesdouma You missed that California produces and refines a significant percentage of its oil usage. When converting to EV, you reduce the need for gasoline. Each gallon of gasoline requires more electricity to extract, transport, and refine, than an EV will use to drive the same distance.
English

Did Kalanick really run a sizable tech company? Because his thinking is so sloppy it’s hard to believe he can tell a good idea from a bad one.
If all of California’s 340 billion annual light-duty vehicle miles transitioned to electric autonomous vehicles consuming an average of 200 watt-hours per mile the additional electricity demand would be 68 TWh/year. This is 24% of California’s 2023 electricity generation of 281 TWh. The unused generating capacity of California’s fleet of natural gas plants is currently 288TWh per year. This more than four times the electricity needs of an electrified auto fleet. This generating capacity is unused because current power consumption is peaky - we use a lot in the evenings but very little at night, so we turn off power plants at night and the average gas power plant in California only puts out 26% of it’s potential capacity. Similarly the power grid is largely unused at night because the nighttime load is small compared to the peak daytime capacity that the grid is built to deliver. By charging mainly when the grid and power plants are being underutilized a California EV fleet can be powered entirely by currently unused grid and generation capacity.
And BTW - this would be a huge win for the climate and for California’s air pollution even if all the EV miles were powered off of unused natural gas capacity. EV’s have a ‘well to wheels’ efficiency that is several times higher than that of ICE vehicles (80%-90% vs 15%-25%) so the total fossil fuel consumption drops by a factor of 4 or so if ICE vehicles are substituted with fossil fuel powered EVs. Additionally natural gas combustion in a power plant is much cleaner than gasoline/diesel combustion in a moving car. Total pollution due to light vehicle transportation would drop by an order of magnitude even if all the EVs were powered off of natural gas power plants.
The air in LA would become dramatically better as a result of this. And simultaneously the ROI on existing grid and power generation infrastructure would take a giant leap upwards.

Former Uber CEO Travis Kalanick @travisk on @theallinpod talks about AI and self-driving cars, including Tesla’s advantage in building them, power grid issues in California, and whether gas-powered AVs could be a temporary fix. He also covers public trust, safety concerns, and the race between $TSLA, Waymo, and Uber. Plus, how will Chinese AV tech affect the U.S.? Is the world ready for affordable self-driving cars? 👇

@paintingbymegan What does the "woke movement" have to do with critical thinking?
English

@elonmusk Because our students in the US aren't taught how to think critically thanks to the woke movement. It's all been how to follow your emotions, and down the rabbit hole you go...
Critical thinking is absolutely necessary and it is a trained skill.

The President is required to give Congress 30 days notice—and a good reason—before removing an IG.
In the dead of night, he unlawfully fired at least 15 without cause.
His goal is clear: to replace these independent watchdogs with partisan hacks.

@elonmusk Can you remember back to when you used to care about helping people?
English

@elonmusk Right, wouldn't want all those other countries to have people rich enough to afford our products.
English

@elonmusk But he doesn't seem to want to care for them or teach them.

@FreshairIan @Everyth1ngElec Same way that surveys adjust for skewed attitudes of people receiving massive oil subsidies.
English

@Everyth1ngElec How did the survey adjust for skewed attitudes of people receiving massively reduced taxation due to driving an EV?
English

Thos that try Battery EVs overwhelmingly think they are better than conventional combustion cars: thisismoney.co.uk/money/electric…

English

@AdamShame3 @Everyth1ngElec I think my used, cheap car (EV) is the best car I have ever owned. Same sized screen as the previous car, no Spotify (whatever that is). It is blue and small.
English

@Everyth1ngElec Everybody thinks their new, expensive car is the best they've ever owned. Its 'tech' is newer than the last one. Maybe this is the first they've owned with a big touch screen. And built-in Spotify. Etc. Etc.
And hey! It doesn't have a radiator grille! And it's grey! And huge!
English

@Everyth1ngElec How many of these owners have an EV as their only vehicle? Great as a second car if you have off road parking/charging but I wouldn't want one as my primary vehicle yet.
English

@tohonestycom @Everyth1ngElec Exactly when was anyone presented with governmental force to buy an EV? Any country, any time.
Yeah, that's what I thought. You think EV subsidies are force, but you don't consider any of the oil subsidies that way.
English

@BernieSanders Which is essentially just a symbolic gesture. How about instead, proposing lots of amendments which reduce the worst of the pork?
English

@SenWarren How is it that our legislators allow people to conspire to hide illegal acts with an NDA?
English

@SenSanders You could just change the laws for corporations, and make the primary responsibility of corporations to improve the public good, rather than being obligated to produce profits for shareholders. Fix all these issues at once, rather than piecemeal.
