@RogerPielkeJr A link would be great! Without knowing the specifics of the methodology your NY Post article felt very similar to arguments being made by older climatologists in mid 20th C, as the discipline became less descriptive and more computational

This is an absolute classic in climate journalism/advocacy Subgenre = defend/smear Doesn’t really hit the mark IMO To be fair, it’s a tough situation to try to defend And despite their best efforts, I’m not remotely a climate skeptic eenews.net/articles/clima…

@RogerPielkeJr So your problem is with her scholarship or more accurately the methodology employed? It seems a more effective strategy might be to critique this in a professional setting rather an op-ed...

@Green_Gambit Well let’s think about that If we put a group of experts in mouse evolution in charge of reviewing literature on detection & attribution of trends in extreme weather phenomena under the IPCC framework, would that be a good idea? I jest But of course we want relevant expertise

@RogerPielkeJr Perhaps, I don't know the stats on peer reviewed literature in this area. Is there evidence that in past iterations the disciplinary make up of this team has affected their abilities objectively review the literature?

@Green_Gambit Given the prevalence of EEA in the peer reviewed literature on extreme events and detection/attribution you could justify 1 person with this expertise on the author team (ie, 5%) Even that would be over-representation But 9? That’s a stacked deck, quite obviously

@RogerPielkeJr I wasn't so enamored by the EENews piece. In your New York Post article "Otto is joined by two other lead authors and 17 other authors. Of these 20, nine focus their work on “extreme event attribution.” To me this reads like pluralism, or diversity of methods. Storm in a tea cup?

@Green_Gambit You are correct I should have said “implies” IMO a bit too clever Any other parts of the EENews article concern you? Eg, the false statements?

@RogerPielkeJr The article doesn't say "Otto’s WWA has “nothing to do with litigation”" - its says, "Otto said...that her work with the IPCC has “absolutely nothing to do with litigation.”" I thought you were all about honesty and transparency?

We advocate for more engagement between social scientists & historians, we contend that social scientists can enhance their own study designs w/insights from historians, like an understanding of how scientific terms have been used to serve specific imperialist agendas.

Even before these new changes, accessing the UK's citizen funded public broadcaster's written records was opaque & lacking accessibility for the average person. Join me in signing this open letter.
