While I was applying for my PhD in the US, I wrote a literature review and submitted it to a journal for publication. I mentioned it in my SOP and listed it in my CV as “under review for publication”. I also brought it up in my recommendation letters. Looking back, I can say that move single-handedly got me into the highly-competitive PhD program at UTDallas with only Bachelors and no Masters degree. Try it.

I don’t know how legit this is but it’s worth giving a shot.
