Directed by creature-FX madmen Screaming Mad George (the gooey genius behind Society's infamous shunting scene) and Steve Wang (master of creature effects) produced by Brian Yuzna (king of Re-Animator, From Beyond, and all things gloriously grotesque), it's a wild live-action take on Yoshiki Takaya's Bio-Booster Armor Guyver manga/anime. Picture this latchkey nightmare Average college dude Sean Barker (Jack Armstrong) finds a mysterious alien Guyver Unit that bonds to him like a sentient pizza box from hell, transforming him into a bio-armored cyborg beast with retractable mega-swords, gravity crushers, high-frequency vibes, and that iconic helmet scream. He gets hunted by the evil Chronos Corporation (aka Kronos), run by slimy exec Fulton Balcus (David Gale) and mutant goon squad led by Lisker (Michael Berryman —fresh off The Hills Have Eyes terror). They unleash waves of grotesque Zoanoid shapeshifters in practical-suit glory—think full-on tokusatsu monster mayhem with martial arts brawls, apartment demolitions, and over-the-top body explosions. Bonus rad cameos? Mark Hamill as rogue CIA agent Max Reed (Luke Skywalker goin' full B-movie!), Vivian Wu as Sean's girl Mizky, Jeffrey Combs in support, scream queen Linnea Quigley, Jimmie 'JJ' Walker, and more '80s/'90s cult icons. Pure early-'90s cheese: practical effects dripping slime, karate kicks, and that perfect blend of manga weirdness meets American direct-to-video energy. Most of us discovered it on VHS around '92—right in the sweet spot of Ninja Turtles reruns, Power Rangers precursors, and late-night USA Up All Night binges.
