#LGBTQ History 4. b. Apr. 30, 1900, David Manners, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, 1930s Hollywood actor, “Dracula” (1931), “The Mummy” (1932), novelist, philosopher, author “Look Through: An Evidence of Self Discovery” (1971); 30 year LTR w/ playwright, Bill Mercer. d. 1998
The Gay Aesthetic@jmlx_john2

David Manners (b. 30 April 1900) was a Canadian American actor who was discovered at a Hollywood party in the late Twenties by gay director James Whale and soon became a popular leading man. Among his most famous roles, were Dracula (1931 with Bela Lugosi), The Mummy (1932 with Boris Karloff), The Black Cat (1934 with both Lugosi and Karloff), and The Mystery of Edwin Drood (1935). In addition, he co-starred with Barbara Stanwyck in Frank Capra's The Miracle Woman (1931), with John Barrymore and Katharine Hepburn in A Bill of Divorcement (1932), and with Claudette Colbert in Torch Singer (1933). Despite being a major box-office draw, Manners became frustrated with his roles and career in general, so following his work on three films released in 1936 -- Hearts in Bondage, A Woman Rebels, and Lucky Fugitives, he left the studios and retired from film work. He did, however, continue to perform regularly on stage for another 17 years, appearing in various productions on tour, in summer stock, and on Broadway. In 1953, Manners retired from acting entirely. He also became a published novelist in 1941 with Convenient Season; a second novel, Under Running Laughter, followed in 1943. Both were published by E.P. Dutton (where his father had worked as a literary advisor). Although he was gay, on May 23, 1929, David married Suzanne Bushnell in New York City. The marriage was brief (they divorced in 1932) and was likely “lavender” in nature. In 1948, he met playwright Frederic William Mercer and the two lived as partners (first on Manner’s ranch in Victorville, then in Pacific Palisades) for 30 years until Mercer's death in 1978. In 1998, 20 years later, David died at age 98 in a retirement community in Santa Barbara, California. His body was cremated and the ashes were taken to San Bernardino County and scattered at Rancho Yucca Loma in Victor Valley.
