if you're astonished by US/Israel blowing up apartment buildings, you've been blind for decades, but still somehow ... the idea of a US fighter pilot getting briefed for this and spending hours in the air to get an apartment complex. the personal dishonor is extraordinary.

The building where Dr. Saeed Shamaqadari, an electrical engineering scientist, was assassinated by American fighter jets. In this building, dozens of other citizens were also martyred and injured.

@chacaranda the crazy part is that people *will* walk there, on both sides of that street. a few because they want to 'explore' but many more because it made sense at the time as they way to get their impoverished ass to where it has to be

@Rocko64_ this is why i got a lot more out of solzhenitsyn than orwell. orwell would have you thinking civilization is all the same, no need to look further than 'authoritarian'. solzhenitsyn painted a portrait of class antagonism, instead.

@liminallogs the point of recognizing tactics that won't work, events that won't happen, and the forces that make that so, is so that we can consider options that we previously rejected. once we know an avenue is fruitless, we go back and look for turnings we didn't take.

we're reaching several inflection points where the survival of our species and our freedoms are only solvable if "everyone just", so ceding to this belief is accepting failure prematurely. if some do not just willingly, then they must be forced to just.

elections are under threat, and dems aren't nearly as aggressive as needed but that being said, it's hard for me to imagine the median voter putting them at the helm for an incredibly long time. what it would take for them to regain public trust is something beyond my imagining.

@liminallogs this is what is always on my mind when people explore the boundary between US and israel...will the mythology survive nuclear war? will hating the USA still seem so impossible to people that they will decide to hate just israel?

if the U.S. uses nukes on Iran it is not unthinkable that the rest of the globe turns extremely hostile towards the U.S economically, trade wise, financially, and even physically, because the entire global project of civilization will be on life support as a result of that action

@paul_jkrause fwiw, i don't believe in 'best'...a lot of good ones already mentioned. i'd add: Gateway by Frederik Pohl, Rainbows End by Vernor Vinge, Holy Fire by Bruce Sterling, Nova by Sam Delany,

What is the best sci-fi novel you've read? There are many good ones. Great ones. Not just because he recently passed away, but Hyperion by Dan Simmons has to be up there for everyone who has read it...

@ThomasiiiR @paul_jkrause a rare case of a singular novel where, nonetheless, the follow-up 'Saint Leibowitz and the Wild Horse Woman' is as good (imo)

there might be minor production declines this year (from un- or under-replenished soil nitrogen) or next year (from increased cropping of alfalfa to replenish soil nitrogen naturally) but not enough for actual shortages. even so i'm skeptical of the techno-optimistic position

the fertilizer issue showcases the issue with the techno-optimist critique of the Malthusians- while certainly technological advancements can surpass the rate of population growth, this can lead to a vulnerability in which input goods subject to disruption become required

only halfway into track 2 and i'm contemplating the possibility that fine young cannibals was a good experimental band that happened to only have one song that had mass appeal (instead of a bad pop band that only scored once)
