@hiltontarrant @Moneyweb You forgot to reference Buffalo City Metro. While undeserving of the Metro title, they are also aiming for an above 12% electricity increase on 1 June.

@RomanCabanac I've stuck with a Nespresso machine at home and in my office combined with Jacobs/Douwe Egbert pods over bean to cup. As you said, complete convenience and if you shop smart, sub R4 per pod....

Ya ya, get a bean to cup or a Breville or what what. I'm not the kind of man to measure things or overthink perfection. I just want to press a button.

At the beginning of April, my car cost ~R1800/tank After the April increase, it went up to about R2600-2700/tank On Wednesday once fuel goes up, it will cost me over R3000/tank. I use at minimum 2 tanks a months (after I pay my dad's weekly fuel to fetch the boys from school every day). I have to make adjustments to my budget to afford this. I cannot imagine the folks that don't have the budget for this.

@byronrode How does your tank increase by 66% when the petrol price has increased by less than 40%?

@Zeboetie @mommy_moneyza I don't disagree with you, but I also don't have sympathy anymore. If you take an 84 month car finance deal, sorry for you. 40% residual and then find you're R150k upside down when trying to sell, shem! People need to get educated and learn to purchase within their means.

@GregBeckerZA @mommy_moneyza I grant you if you are disciplined and have a good career trajectory... but it is a big IF. I imagine a lot of borrowers will see the 1st 2 years payments then lifestyle creep sets in and all of a sudden, that balance payment hits like a truck.

See what competition does? Capitec entering the home loan market forced established players to think of new solutions to keep market share Now, these under 35’s need jobs otherwise no one is moving the needle in sales

@mommy_moneyza This is a horrible idea, paying in effect rent to the bank for a property that is in your name and just deferring the balance. It is up there with bad ideas like 40% balloon payments on cars and 50 year mortgages.

@mommy_moneyza @SAHomeLoans While the first 3 years interest only was a nice breather while we improved the house, even before the 3 years was up, I was overpaying monthly and am still WAY ahead of where normal repayments curve would be. Access bond savings FTW! 2/2

@mommy_moneyza I agree about competition being good, but FNB definitely not first here. @SAHomeLoans have offered their EDGE product for over a decade. 23 year bond term with the first 3 years interest only. I took it in 2018 and was under 35. 1/2

This is one of the most honest company responses I’ve ever come across. No stuffy corporate justifications, just the truth.
Kanthan Pillay 🇿🇦@KanthanPillay

I received this email today from Thrupps Illovo with regard to this post: Dear Mr Pillay Thrupps appreciates your comments on Pork Lard and Beef Tallow pricing at our Illovo store and would like to make good with you and all customers affected by the sudden increase. Our Butchery prepares these particular products from scratch and we do not source from manufacturers. This resulted in a price which has been the same since 2018. Our oversight is that we have not addressed the pricing since starting to make it in our meat prep areas on site. A recent change in management of Thrupps Butchery brought to light this oversight. When we realised our mistake, we took pricing from the market which resulted in the crazy increase you so correctly have highlighted. We feel our prices are competitive when compared to other retailers, But the jump is not good optics on this occasion and poorly deal with on the shop floor. The manager involved could have been a lot more sympathetic for which we apologise. We hope you will visit us to accept our gesture of making good with a better personal explanation and some free samples of both products. We thank you and apologise for the poor response in store and would like to see you in the shop again soon Warm Regards From all your friends at Thrupps. My comments: 1. I appreciate the fact that Thrupps took the trouble to look at my bio to find my website and send me an email through there. I also appreciate that they copied @wendyknowler as I had tagged her in the post. 2. I accept their explanation that they had not adjusted prices on these products for a long time and that an increase was in order. 3. I especially note the fact that their apology did not make excuses for the way their managers handled the matter. This is the way businesses need to own their mistakes, but rarely do. As I said at the start, I have been shopping at Thrupps since 1996. As recently as December, I sang their praises. I'm glad this was not misplaced. I will continue to shop there, and continue to buy these products at the higher prices.
