As a young graduate student in Boston, I was assigned to work with inner-city youth in a Church congregation in downtown Boston. During that time, I met a group of young men who would quietly, profoundly change my life forever. I came to realize that the more I tried to serve them, the more they blessed me in return. Earlier this week, we were thrilled to sit down to dinner with each of these men—now grown—and their wives. My heart was full as I listened to their stories and witnessed their faith in Jesus Christ. Each has served a mission, been married in the temple, and is now raising a beautiful young family. Living the gospel of Jesus Christ has a way of placing people in our lives who shape us forever. I am deeply grateful for the examples, friendship, and enduring faith of these remarkable men.

Our entire crew is holding Coach Beam’s family, his players, and the Laney and Oakland communities in our hearts. We’re praying for everyone who knew him, learned from him, and loved him.

Everyone on our Last Chance U team is shocked and devastated by the news about Coach Beam. Filming with him at Laney College gave us a firsthand look at his passion, his integrity, and his unwavering commitment to the young men he coached — and to the city of Oakland.

He was more than a football coach — he was a mentor, a steadying force, and a lifeline for so many players who believed in themselves because he believed in them.

Coach Beam devoted his life to lifting up that community. He understood its challenges, celebrated its strengths, and poured himself into creating opportunities for the kids who grew up there.

Susan and I have spent the day with members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and other community members who were involved in the tragic shooting episode that took place in Michigan on Sunday.   The devotion of these faithful members makes me want to be more devoted, and the faithfulness of these good people makes me want to be more faithful.   They have the capacity—because of the eternal perspective of the gospel of Jesus Christ—to learn lessons in tragedy in mortality that prepare them for eternal life.   We are familiar with the admonition that we should mourn with those that mourn. There are broken hearts here in Michigan. My invitation to any and all is to continue to pray for these good people.
