Good Luck Everyone, it's a great meeting.
Charlie Hughes is one of my favourite centre-back prospects in England right now, for multiple reasons...
Starting with his defending—in the modern game we’re looking for 1v1 specialists with physical prowess in the channels on top of being dominant in the air, aggressive when stepping up and comfortable making recovery runs and turning whilst back-tracking.
All of these attributes belong to Hughes. He is a defender’s defender. His strength shoulder to shoulder in the channels is a cut above and his confidence and bravery to step into the other half and onto the touchline to pin the opposition player facing their own goal is years beyond.
He can be over-reliant on contact in duels but with his physical skill-set, it’s the best approach for him. 185cm, broad shoulders and powerful legs leave him with a build that can spring out to pounce but also can turn fast, retreat and move his feet quickly on/off the ball.
A nice trait of Hughes though, is the understanding of when to stand off in moments when 1v1, noticing when a player has the chance to turn and giving himself that extra couple of yards to judge how they’re going to approach him with the ball.
In possession, I’ve seen Hughes being used as a CCB/RCB in a 3-2 shape on the ball because of his technical and physical blend. As mentioned before, he has incredibly fast feet and a good turning radius so under pressure he’s capable, against Blackpool he single-handedly rolled out of pressure 4/5 times.
His passing does shine more when Wigan have gotten past the first line of engagement—no outstanding angle bias, good variety on the ball (short/long/clipped), composed in the way he receives the ball and there have been encouraging signs of him carrying the ball from wide CB this season too.
This lad is OUTSTANDING. God knows how far he can go but everything from his technical, physical and mental profile screams the absolute top of English football.
