@thewestcorkbull @JustineBrian Why is Newgrange better? Stonehenge is far more complex in terms of its astronomical function. Newgrange tracks only the Winter Solstice sunrise, whereas Stonehenge tracks this, the Winter Solstice sunrise, complex lunar movements, equinoxes, etc.

@JustineBrian No. That just means its older. New Grange is clearly better, more impressive and more advanced than a ring of giant stones. Stonehenge the brits call it. Dream all you want but you just deny facts

When you’re not confident of your culture or history, but pretend you are, everything becomes a competition or challenge against the ‘other’. Newgrange is an extraordinary place. But its existence isn’t in conflict with other aincent man made constructions - they’re all extraordinary in their own right.
Ælþemplær@Aelthemplaer

I love the fact we Irish beat the Egyptians by over a thousand years when it comes to building cool giant stuff IIRC we even beat the Britons with their puny Stone Hedge.

@G_Man_Baker @1882_Tottenham @NLDN11 You won't find many right backs better than him. And if you do, they'll cost the same if not more than what we'd sell him for. Ultimately, for whatever reason, Spurs fans judge every player by perfection, and if he isn't perfect, we say get rid. He has weaknesses, but he's top.

@G_Man_Baker @1882_Tottenham @NLDN11 Yes there's a massive drop off to Spence. Despite what people say, Porro isn't a bad 1v1 defender, most of the goals he gets blamed for are because he's asked to mark 2 people when our winger doesn't track back, and Porro is statistically one of our most creative players.

@BretDevereaux @librarythingtim Diplomacy, oratory, administration, logistics. Napoleon was also amazing at these things, as well as completely revolutionising the legal, educational, and administerial systems of Europe at the time. The idea that "killing" was all they were good at is laughably reductive.

I can't help but notice these lists of 'great men' are all men who were great at killing. In the case of Alexander or (fictional!) Achilles, great at killing and *nothing else.* No scientists, artists, writers, humanitarians. Just killers. Not quite my definition of greatness.
Modern Caesar@ModernCeasar

People who hate Great Men theory know that they could never reach same heights as Achilles, Alexander or Caesar. So they live in self-delusion that Great Men don't exist and push agendas that support their narratives.

@AttonMathews @EC2man Social media is dangerous to kids, and if you just dismiss anything that says so as "junk science", you're not actually being curious to find the truth, just rejecting anything that goes against what you want to be true.

@GregoryGosson @EC2man This and in principal I apply the standard of dangerous and unusual. The use of social networks and media are neither and systemically there is enough junk science in the present era to justify anything.

Bereaved parents should have no place in the creation and passing of laws. And nor should we give their arguments and pleas any more weight than the arguments or pleas of anyone else. And further we are entitled to ask if their own inadequate parenting contributed to their child’s death. You don’t get to demand legal change of great impact without proper scrutiny of your own actions.
Sky News@SkyNews

Bereaved parents have met with Sir Keir Starmer to discuss a social media ban for under-16s. Ruth Moss, whose 13-year-old daughter Sophie took her own life in 2014, told @LucyJMcDaid that she hopes the PM will "do the right thing". Read more: trib.al/oLaVUlc

@SycamoarSoc @EC2man The UK has absolute power to force processors/providers to block any business or site WITHIN the UK, just not outside of it. 4chan and Kiwi don't care about this because they don't make money from the UK anyway. A UK ban means nothing to them.

@GregoryGosson @EC2man The possibility of payment processor pressure is more realistic, but again, the UK has so much less power than the processors it's unbelievable. I just think you overestimate the pulling power of Kier Starmer or his successor.

@AttonMathews @EC2man We're not talking about banning computers, but specific apps/sites, who could (and many already do) monitor their own users. Social media is demonstrably bad for kids/teens, it's been shown to massively increase depression, anxiety, bullying, and suicidality.

@GregoryGosson @EC2man Why since categorically computer use almost any context. Is not dangerous and unusual where objectively. You can't get peer pressured into crystal meth through a computer. Not to mention the effective impact of a "ban" would unavoidable be mass surveillance and data breaches.

@SycamoarSoc @EC2man Snapchat operates a multibillion dollar operation in the UK. X is desperate for money and users, and UK is top 5 globally. All the rest come under Meta, who has already demonstrated they don't want to defy Ofcom, they're only haggling over price.

@SycamoarSoc @EC2man Meta is representative of any company that makes money in the UK. Ofcom can force UK payment services/internet providers/banks etc to blacklist non-compliant companies. This doesn't matter to 4chan/Kiwi because they don't make money in Britain. It matters to X/Snap/Meta/etc.

@GregoryGosson @EC2man Yeah I seen enough junk data in my life to know when to put it aside. This and we have online platforms much longer than the 2010's ironic enough I was a part of that generation. I know drug addicts whom got hooked in high school, but never anyone hooked to a computer.

@AttonMathews @EC2man 15 years olds and younger don't need access to adult spaces, and there is overwhelming longitudinal evidence that that very access is deeply harmful. Kids prior to the 2010s never had social media and they turned out much better (according to literally all the data on it).

@SevenSeasSoBlue @EC2man Why would an under 16 social media ban require government logins? Leave it to the private companies to handle that side of things (like porn sites are now doing).

@GregoryGosson @EC2man The government at present can't track us. Make it an obligation to sign in as individual identifiable users for anything (library terminals etc) and the government can track us. A malign govt would love to be able to gather data on absolutely everything we say & do.

@GregoryGosson @EC2man The porn ban works because those companies consented. I don't know why, but assume it's because the UK's request is roughly consistent with US/international laws and treaties, and/or they think the reputational damage would be severe.

@SycamoarSoc @EC2man The Meta case proves this is nonsense. Kiwi Farms and 4chan make no money from the UK and don't care if they get banned. The exact opposite is true for social media companies (which is why Meta is only disputing the fine amount and is actively cooperating with Ofcom).

@SycamoarSoc @EC2man Because their claim is not that the UK doesn't have the right to enforce laws in its own country, but that they can't be fined for not following those laws. The UK can still just ban the sites. The choice for the companies becomes access to UK market vs complete freedom.

@AttonMathews @EC2man The idea that social media is central to healthy development is perhaps the most widely and deeply disproven notion I've so far heard in this debate. The exact opposite is true, and has been proven to be true. And social media is the marketplace of slop anyway.

@GregoryGosson @EC2man From a security standpoint its a nightmare. In principal social media is the market place of ideas. Exposure to ideal challenges to belief is central to development. Social media is an should remain anonymous an attempted ban undermines that. A ban has no value to the public

@GregoryGosson @EC2man "The government doesn't have to log anything, or be involved in enforcement at all against individuals." Once they have a trail of who exactly you are and exactly where you go, it can be logged and can in theory be used against you. This isn't paranoia but pattern awareness.

@GregoryGosson @EC2man To keep under-16s offline all of us must verify who exactly we are & what we're looking at, & that's simply not the government's business. Kids need parents to look after them properly & teach them survival skills. We do NOT need the govt logging everything we do online.
