The government is considering plans to allow patients in England to bypass their GP and directly access some NHS diagnostic tests for suspected cancer. My recent article in @bmj_latest discusses the need for careful evaluation of this policy. bmj.com/content/382/bm…

Bottom line is most patients who present to their GP with a high risk symptom for cancer don't present with a lower risk symptom in the previous year (or at least don't have it recorded). This differs by cancer site and symptom. Lots more in the paper and loads in the supplement!
