Honestly, I don’t think the Spring Triple Crown carries the same prestige as the Classic Triple Crown. The Japanese Derby is the ultimate goal for Japanese horsemen, and the older-horse G1 races in spring do not always attract the absolute best possible fields. But in terms of sheer difficulty, I think the Spring Triple Crown is unbelievably demanding. The real monster in that sequence is the Tenno Sho (Spring). Within roughly three months, a horse has to stretch from 2000m all the way to 3200m, then cut back again from 3200m to 2200m. That is brutal. Even with Kitasan Black, I don’t think it was simply a matter of whether he suited the Takarazuka Kinen. I think the hard schedule itself — running a record-breaking Tenno Sho (Spring) after the Osaka Hai — eventually caught up with him. Honestly, I don’t even know whether Croix du Nord can be brought into the Takarazuka in racing condition after this. But if he somehow becomes the first horse in history to complete the Spring Triple Crown, we have to recognize that as something truly extraordinary.
