A record-breaking day at the 2026 Select Sale—and Efforia’s first crop was one of the biggest stories. Day 1 turnover reached a record ¥17.66 billion, the highest ever for the yearling session. One of the key drivers was the remarkable demand for Efforia’s first crop. With six winners already on the track, buyers responded enthusiastically, and five of his yearlings sold for more than ¥100 million. Northern Farm president Katsumi Yoshida credited Efforia’s appeal to both his race record and his trademark finishing kick, adding that his progeny appear to have inherited the champion’s willing temperament. Reflecting on the sale as a whole, Yoshida described it as “the world’s leading thoroughbred auction,” highlighting its increasingly international profile.

The first yearling by Do Deuce to enter the sales ring has found a new home. At the 2026 Select Sale, the colt out of Sinadiriya (Lot 310) sold for ¥96 million and is expected to join the stable of Yasuo Tomomichi, who also trained Do Deuce. The buyer, Junko Kondo of the well-known Admire ownership group, said she hopes to “continue the dream with this colt” by sending him to Tomomichi. Trainer Yasuo Tomomichi also noted that the youngster already reminds him of his famous sire, commenting that his way of walking, topline, and overall silhouette bear similarities to Do Deuce. An intriguing first chapter for the offspring of one of Japan’s modern champions.

An exciting new mating has been revealed in Japan. Brede Weg, winner of the 2023 Queen Elizabeth II Cup (G1), is in foal to Epiphaneia. If all goes well, the foal is expected to be born next year, bringing together one of Japan’s top modern mares with one of the country’s most influential stallions. It’s a mating that will surely attract plenty of attention from breeders and racing fans alike.

The first yearling by Justin Milano to enter the sales ring made an immediate impression. At the 2026 Select Sale, the colt out of Queen Bee II sold for ¥115 million (approximately US$770,000), comfortably surpassing the ¥100 million mark. The colt is expected to join trainer Haruki Sugiyama, who praised his physical balance and noted that he also shows traits inherited from Kizuna, Justin Milano’s sire. Sugiyama added that he hopes the colt will develop into a middle-distance turf performer, reflecting the qualities that made Justin Milano one of Japan’s most exciting Classic winners. A promising commercial debut for a freshman stallion.

I somehow managed to squeeze the sire-by-sire results from the 2026 Select Sale into a single image. You’ll definitely need to switch the image quality to 4K to read it 😅 A quick guide to the columns: Sire: Sire’s name Sessions: Yearlings, Foals or Both Offered: Lots actually offered, excluding withdrawals Sold: Lots sold RNA: Unsold lots—basically Offered minus Sold Clearance: Sold ÷ Offered Gross ¥bn: Total sales in billions of yen. For example, 4.678 means ¥4.678 billion Gross share: The sire’s share of the sale’s total gross Mean ¥m: Average price in millions of yen Median ¥m: The middle price when all sold lots are ranked by price Trim mean ¥m: Average after removing the highest and lowest 10%, reducing the influence of extreme prices

Here’s a sire-by-sire comparison of the 2025 and 2026 Select Sale results A quick guide to the columns: Sire: Sire’s name Comparison flag: Indicates how reliable the year-on-year comparison is based on sample size Both n≥10: At least 10 lots sold in each year. A fairly solid basis for comparison Both n≥3: At least three sold in each year, but fewer than 10 in at least one year. Still useful, but the numbers can swing quite a bit Offered 26: Lots offered in 2026, excluding withdrawals Offered 25: Lots offered in 2025 Δ offered: Change in lots offered: 2026 minus 2025 Sold 26: Lots sold in 2026 Sold 25: Lots sold in 2025 Clear 26: 2026 clearance rate: Sold ÷ Offered Clear 25: 2025 clearance rate Δ clear pp: Change in clearance rate, measured in percentage points Gross 26 ¥bn: Total 2026 sales in billions of yen Gross 25 ¥bn: Total 2025 sales Δ gross ¥bn: Difference in total sales: 2026 minus 2025 Δ gross %: Year-on-year change in total sales: 2026 ÷ 2025 − 1 ※One important note: a rise in gross doesn’t necessarily mean prices went up! Gross can increase simply because more horses were offered and sold, so make sure to check the mean and median as well. Mean 26 ¥m: Average 2026 price in millions of yen Mean 25 ¥m: Average 2025 price Δ mean %: Year-on-year change in the average price Median 26 ¥m: Median 2026 price Median 25 ¥m: Median 2025 price Δ median ¥m: Difference in median price: 2026 minus 2025 Δ median %: Year-on-year change in the median price
