@PatsFballBlog Apparently they communicated it to associations in March, but was never officially announced to the public - presume individual FA's could confirm/deny that, but definitely seems like they should have communicated it as soon as it was announced to FA's

@GriffinDaniel Good point - the questions remain, though: why did CAF take so long to force through a rule change, and why did they do it in the first place? It all seems a little suss to me.

I was wondering why Nigeria, despite finishing seventh in CAF's runners-up list, are in the World Cup play-offs. In March, CAF decided that results against the bottom sides in each group wouldn't count. It's incredibly harsh on Burkina Faso, who missed out by one goal. #WCQ2026

@PatsFballBlog Guess it would have also been very harsh on Niger to have two fewer games to contribute to their 2nd place ranking, through no fault of their own - two potential wins vs Eritrea would have seen them in that top 4 over Cameroon in the original format?

Did CAF indulge in this late tinkering with the rules to help out teams like Nigeria, who had only taken something like 3 points out of a possible 12 by the end of March? Just a thought. In any case, I feel very sorry for Burkina Faso.

The way I see it, 12 months ago Gib would have lost that game 2-0, with a much older squad, and not even laid a glove on their opponents - there's definitely a base to build upon in September. #Gibraltar

@sidlowe Feel a lot of managers don't do well at club and international level with squad rotation, especially in dead-rubbers - can remember Jota getting a 3 month injury for Liverpool in a CL game vs Midtjylland where Liverpool had won their group & Midtjylland couldn't get above 4th
