In the book "They Thought They Were Free" the author interviews about a dozen or so people who lived through Nazi Germany and were involved in the regime at various levels. One person was an open socialist in the early days but changed his party affiliation when it was clear where it was headed. All but a few of them struggled with some level of regret that they were complicit or didn't do enough, but that guy in particular basically said joining the party to protect himself will forever make him feel like a coward, in a way that seemingly deeply impacted him years later. Almost all of them struggled with it on some level. We're in a moment in history where we will all be faced with similar decisions it seems. How complicit are you? How complicit will you be when it's all said and done? Obviously we all hope we won't have World War II or Holocaust level devastation on our consciences but unfortunately it's not up to us and arguably we've already "Crossed the Rubicon" so to speak. I'm not going to act like I'm doing even close to enough on a personal level. But I try and stay aware that I will have to change that eventually. Because I'd rather figure out what that looks like than let the devastation happen while I sell out my principles and community to save myself. On some level though you can spend a lot of time trying to figure out what that looks like and suddenly it's too late, you're one of the people reminiscing on how things got so bad and how much you regret not doing more. There are no easy answers because these are not easy times.

Broadcasters that are running hoaxes and news distortions - also known as the fake news - have a chance now to correct course before their license renewals come up. The law is clear. Broadcasters must operate in the public interest, and they will lose their licenses if they do not. And frankly, changing course is in their own business interests since trust in legacy media has now fallen to an all time low of just 9% and are ratings disasters. The American people have subsidized broadcasters to the tune of billions of dollars by providing free access to the nation’s airwaves. It is very important to bring trust back into media, which has earned itself the label of fake news. When a political candidate is able to win a landslide election victory after in the face of hoaxes and distortions, there is something very wrong. It means the public has lost faith and confidence in the media. And we can’t allow that to happen. Time for change!
