Today we are announcing the largest single addition to our casualty records since the Second World War, following a major international research project drawing on rare historical records. Our beautiful Saylor took her last breath today at 2:08pm while her daddy & I held her & loved on her. She did not go one second without knowing how much she was loved & cared for & how much we wished we could have saved her from this awful disease. Saylor fought hard & she fought long, but her body could no longer fight.

Last year a little visitor came by. I had no idea what it was but after further questions discovered it was a Hummingbird Hawk Moth. They're back, but this time I filmed them. Never seen or heard of one before. The beautiful things you discover in your 60s ❤️

Today in 1916, British Empire and French forces launch a major offensive against the German lines along the River Somme. The 140 days of heavy fighting that follow push the Germans back roughly five miles at a cost of a half a million casualties. German losses are nearly 500,000 killed, wounded or missing.

On 1st July 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme, the British Army suffered the greatest loss of life in its history. Communities across the UK and the Commonwealth felt the impact. From towns and villages at home, men were drawn into the Somme’s killing fields — many never to return. Vincent is a beautiful 5 year old male cat. He is looking for a new home through no fault of his own. Vincent hasn't lived with other animals or young children before so we don't know how he would be. He would be best as the only pet. Older kids who are calm, from 13+ would be okay. Vincent is neutered and healthy with no medical issues. He is a sensitive and affectionate cat and likes a peaceful home. Vincent enjoys gentle strokes and once settled, enjoys being brushed. He is an indoor cat at the moment, however would thrive with access to the outdoors. Vincent will come with his carry box, scratch tree and sleeping blankets. We’re really really struggling to find Jake a home, we knew it wouldn’t be easy, but it’s not impossible. If everyone who sees his post can share, the power of sharing really does make a difference. Let’s help Jake have a better life. Jake is a 6 year old Bearded collie x Boarder Collie. Jake is a product of his environment. He lived in home with two elderly owners, and has grown up with both of them going through the various stages of dementia. Other than walk and feed Jake, both owners had no idea of how to train or look after a dog. As a result he has had a stressful life to date, and at times has suffered physical abuse as a method of control. This shows in his behaviour, (nervous, defensive and will attack if feels threatened). Training has been at a basic level, house trained and walking on the lead. Jake gets nervous of noise, phones ,hoovers etc. This will lead to excessive barking and with hoovers he will attack them. In the late evening he will start barking for no good reason. Probably this is related to his owners health condition as dementia sufferers symptoms get worse later in the day. That sums up Jake’s bad points. Outside Jake is a different dog. He no longer pulls on the lead when walking, takes a command to wait and is more comfortable with passing vehicles. Small fast cars are still a slight issue. He is no problem when he meets people outside and will lie down should a conversation take place. Most times he is fine meeting other dogs. The exception is if another dog gets aggressive. He will respond. He does not like cats! It should be noted that Jake is also ok with people coming into the house. He loves to run and fetch a ball. He will happily play outside all day if someone is throwing a ball. Currently this is done on a long rope lead as his play area is not fully enclosed. Jake requires a quiet home with owners who understand the breed, and can continue to improve his issues. He is not ready ( and may never be) for a house with young children. He needs his space to regain the trust that a raised voice or hand is not a threat. Over the past 6 weeks there has been an improvement in his behaviour. That said there is still a way to go before he becomes the dog he can and should be. Jake has a diet of dry food mixed with a small sachet of wet food. In addition to this he does get treats, which he enjoys, as a reward. From the limited experience with Jake he has been ok in the car. Jake has and has always had a large cage that he goes into if left alone. He also sleeps in it at night. He is fit and healthy. For anymore information please email info@help2rehome.com

Sad to lose little Al Pacino. We fixed him up last year and he had a lovely end of his life. We deal with so many sick and older dogs that losing some is inevitable but never easy. His internal organs and especially kidneys got him in the end. A very good boy

Keith went to church yesterday. Inside the church, during the service. The churchyard he has done many times, on his usual east-to-west grid, a standing Sunday booking the Reverend makes and Steve objects to on principle. Yesterday he did the churchyard, and then, with the east section tidy and the morning still young, he found the south porch propped open for the early service and went in. The ten o'clock was, by the time Keith arrived in the nave, approximately at the second hymn. Accounts vary on the exact moment the congregation noticed. Most agree it was during "All Things Bright and Beautiful," which several present later judged poorly timed. By the third verse there was an Anglo-Nubian goat standing in the centre aisle, assessing the building with the calm professional eye of a surveyor who has been called in about damp. He did not panic. A church is, to Keith, simply a large stone field with excellent acoustics and an unusual quantity of flowers. He worked it methodically. He sampled the arrangement on the south windowsill, found it acceptable, and moved on. He considered the green altar frontal at length and, to the visible relief of the churchwardens, declined it. He ate precisely one rose, thorns and all, from a pedestal near the font, the way a man tries a single olive at a party to confirm a suspicion about the host. The Reverend, to his enormous credit, did not stop the service. When the hymn reached "all creatures great and small," he gave the smallest nod toward the goat in the aisle, and the congregation, being rural and unsurprised by very much, sang on. Mrs Pelham, eighty-one, in the second pew, reached out and scratched Keith behind the ears as he passed. Keith permitted it. Keith permits very little. Mrs Pelham has dined out on it all weekend. Steve was in the fourth pew. Steve and Keith made eye contact. Nothing was said, because nothing is ever said, but a great deal was understood. Steve did not sing the rest of the hymn. Keith left during the notices, which is when most of the congregation would have left if they could, and was found by Dave in the lane outside, eating cow parsley, with the unhurried air of an animal who has done a thorough job and is ready for his lift. Dave's log, Sunday: "He got into the church. I do not want to discuss how. The Reverend says he is welcome any time, which I am fairly sure was a joke. I have written it in the Ecclesiastical column regardless, in case it was not." The flowers are tidy. The roses are down one. The Reverend has Dave's number, and now, apparently, an open invitation. Keith is thinking about Harvest.
