This is unfortunately true. Many people that were queer were denied their freedom upon liberation. Instead of being released alongside other survivors, many gay men were immediately transferred by Allied forces from the concentration camps directly into state prisons to serve out the remainder of their "criminal" sentences. The reason for this was because of a German law called Paragraph 175. It criminalized sexual relations between men and predates the Nazi regime Because the law existed before Hitler's rise to power, the Allied forces did not see it as an example of Nazi persecution or a mechanism of the Holocaust. Instead, they recognized it as a standard law. So, when the camps were liberated, the Allies classified queer folks as common criminals rather than political prisoners or victims of a genocide. About 100,000 men were arrested under this law, and between 5,000 and 15,000 were sent to concentration camps. These men were subjected to some of the most horrific abuse, facing extreme brutality not only from the SS guards but often from their fellow inmates due to severe homophobia. Recognizing queer history is always important. Never forget the injustices incurred against ALL marginalized peoples.
