In the 1920s Arunkant Shah’s grandfather brought this brass cooking pot from India to East Africa. It was originally a plate and Shah’s aunt Laxmiben formed it in into a wok or karai in the 1940s after learning the craft from the iron making community

Decorated with motifs including peacocks, parrots, scorpions and florals – all considered to be auspicious - this smock, known as a Kediyun, is worn by Dhebaria Rabari men in the Kutch district of Gujarat. It is made from heavy white mill cotton and hand and machine stitched

Dated August 1, 1951, this 10,000 shilling note, produced by the East African Currency Board, is an extremely rare example of the currency notes of colonial East Africa. It forms part of our collection of personal objects on display @MuseumOfCroydon

Kangas were often made in India for sale in Africa. The inscription on this kanga, written in Swahili, reads "Take this gift and let us forget what happened before". This is said to be a kanga of 'reconciliation' to be given to someone after a disagreement or as a peace offering

It's been a fantastic couple of months. Overwhelmed by the comments and reaction to our embroidery exhibition. A big thank you to everyone who came to see the works on display and especially to the members of Subrang Arts involved in creating the pieces
