NEW: Five water main breaks in just one week are raising new questions about the state of L.A.’s aging infrastructure.
The biggest: a 110-year-old, 36-inch pipe that ruptured in West Hollywood, sending 17 million gallons of water through the Sunset Strip, flooding businesses, apartments and parking garages.
LADWP reportedly replaces about 45 miles of pipe each year… less than 1% of its roughly 7,000-mile water system.

Pick the game and career field where there are massive tailwinds behind your back. Even if you are not that great, you will probably end up doing quite well
Compare that to picking a career path where the industry is shrinking and there are blockages stopping you from moving up
You could be the smartest person in the field but still end up doing far worse

Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of Sherlock Holmes, once traveled to Switzerland. When he arrived, he took a taxi and the driver told him he wouldn't charge him if he autographed a book.
Conan Doyle, surprised, asked the taxi driver how he knew he was a writer, and the taxi driver replied: "Easy, your shoes are covered in dust that isn't from here. From the pattern of your shoes, I see that they are English shoes. So it's English dust. You have an ink stain on your toes, so you are a writer, a British writer."
