Amid questions about the reliability of 🇺🇸, calls for a “Plan B” among allies have grown. But what would that look like for 🇦🇺? At a recent @USSC event, @BassiJustin explained why there’s no “Plan B” for 🇦🇺 and why defence investment is key to keeping 🇺🇸 engaged in the region.

Heaps of over confident hubris. Zero humility. Zero contrition.

Right. So let me get this straight. The most expensive military on the planet, a institution that consumes more money annually than the GDP of most countries, looked at a twenty thousand dollar drone and said, yes, the correct response to this is a four hundred thousand dollar missile. Twenty times the cost. They did the maths and thought, brilliant, let’s do that. Repeatedly. And then, magnificently, one week in, they rang Ukraine. Ukraine. The country their own president had just finished publicly flogging in the Oval Office like a Victorian schoolmaster with a particularly dim pupil. Trump stood there, chest out, that extraordinary hair doing whatever it does, and announced to the assembled cameras of the world that Ukraine was absolutely the last country he would ever consider asking for help. Seven days later, someone in the Pentagon picked up the phone. The truly staggering part is not the incompetence. Incompetence is everywhere, it’s practically ambient at this point. No, what takes your breath away is the confidence. These people were not quietly embarrassed and privately regrouping. They were strutting. Full chest, full volume, telling the world how this was going to go. It did not go that way. Ukraine, the country they don’t need, is now apparently quite necessary. Remarkable. Stay connected, Gandalv @Microinteracti1

This is the leader of Europe’s largest economy telling Trump: ‘You didn't ask us, you don't have a plan, and we are no longer following you into the dark.' Chancellor Friedrich Merz: "To this day, there is no convincing concept of how this operation could succeed. Washington did not consult us and deemed European assistance unnecessary. Ladies and gentlemen, we would have advised against pursuing this road the way it has been pursued at present. We do not want, dear colleagues, for this war to become a burden on the transatlantic partnership. We want this partnership, and we need it. That is why we are engaging in dialogue with Washington at all levels. In doing so, we are following what I stated a month ago at the Munich Security Conference: We are seeking transatlantic agreement. Therefore, I have always made it clear: We share important goals with the USA. But we must not, and will not, shy away from honestly telling our partners where we see things differently and where we have different interests. Such a partnership must withstand this, otherwise it is not a partnership, dear colleagues."

First, we are capable of producing at least 2,000 effective and combat-proven interceptors every day. We can produce more – it depends on investment. We need about 1,000 interceptors a day, and we can supply at least another 1,000 a day to our allies. Second, we know how to build radar and acoustic coverage to respond to how “shaheds” and other drones approach. Third, we have software that allows radars to keep working even under electronic warfare jamming. In real time, we analyze enemy frequencies and respond to them. And because of this system, we understand how effective our defense is against almost every attack drone, and we can move our positions and air defense to get better results. This iPad gives full control of the situation because we have a system for using our defense tools. If a “shahed” needs to be stopped in the Emirates – we can do it. If it needs to be stopped in Europe or the United Kingdom – we can do it. It is a matter of technology, investment, and cooperation. And the fact that we got through this winter – which Russia tried to make deadly for all our families – shows that our solutions work. From my address to the Parliament of the United Kingdom (4/7)
