That happens because it makes your unconscious mind believe that the unlikely thing could have happened if you hadn’t avoided the situation, thereby making it seem likely.

Avoidance of anxiety producing situations reinforces the incorrect perception that the worst case scenario is far more likely than it actually is.

If the bar is high, many people will rise to it. If the bar is low, very few people will voluntarily exceed it. In this edition of The Psychology Lab, I break down how this plays out in our relationships and how you can move the bar up.

Many people believe that if someone truly cares about them, that person will naturally go above and beyond in the relationship. They’ll communicate clearly. They’ll show appreciation.

My interview with Forbes: In today’s hyper-competitive world, the pursuit of success often leads to a dangerous imbalance between work and life. It’s easy to get caught up in the cycle of endless hours and unrealistic expectations.

Please note: it’s not about the effort required to limbo in your living room but rather, as the subtitle suggests, it’s about the unspoken expectations you might be setting in your relationships that will cause you frustration and disappointment. guywinch.substack.com/subscribe

Most people don’t realize they are risking burnout until they actually burn out. Recovering from burnout is much harder than making small changes in order to avoid getting burnt out in the first place.

Why are we using industrial age methods for recovering after work in the information age? Resting alone will not make us wake up refreshed–we need to do things that are recharging as well. If we veg out all evening we are likely to wake up still feeling mentally tired.
