The experience of Go for most people, who do not live in cities, is seeing One Pokestop miles across town. If you want supplies to catch Pokemon, you need to buy them in that game or cheat.
And to get the actual Pokemon you need for this game you need to play for years and hope they show up in the spawn pool.

it's also worth mentioning that they still occupy a spot in HOME when they're in champions. So if you don't pay for HOME, you can't transfer more than ~30 and have to switch them onto a real game when not in use

A Pokémon stats are saved the FIRST TIME you transfer them to Champions
So for example if you have an untrained Pokémon that you transfer to Champions, then transfer it back to Scarlet/Violet for EV training, and then transfer it back to Champions, your changes won't be applied.
