He died in 2011. Who could have replaced that role? Elon: more iconoclast than mentor. Thiel: a contrarian thinker but not paternal. Andreessen: an investor, not hands-on product Graham: has YC wisdom but it's systematic, not personal. That unique combination—product genius + brutal honesty + genuine paternal investment in others' success—nobody else has all three. He was like this immune system for bad ideas, brutally calling out mediocre thinking before it became entrenched. Without that forcing function, I wonder if the ecosystem lost some of its edge.
