@ethanmckanna @ehuna @wholemars My guess is the unions fight and get half that in most cities... which, ironically, will be moot... as that will be how the industry shakes out anyway: i.e., older folks prefer a human and the technology needs another year or two to sort all the edge cases anyway!

Gonna have to read up on it... I don't work at Uber, obviously and don't have access to any of this information. This is all breaking news. HOWEVER, China is far ahead of us, and they have reportedly stopped issuing licenses and put the brakes on self-driving to protect jobs and for safety (they have 20 providers; it's the wild west). The same will happen here... jurisdictions will each decide to sell a fixed number of licenses to players with rock-solid safety records to protect jobs, ensure safety AND generate revenue. The drivers' unions are for sure driving all of this... so in terms of game theory, Lyft, Uber and DoorDash are in a REALLY tough position. Currently, 99% of their rides/deliveries are handled by human driver partners. Uber and DoorDash are pro-autonomy; in fact, they're investing tens of billions into it, BUT they have to appease the unions by supporting a slower rollout AT THE SAME TIME!
