A commitment to “go where others won’t” is at the crux of HART. Few (inter)national organisations are willing or able to coordinate a humanitarian response in Abyei. In partnership with local networks, we’re working hard to support communities who have been sidelined.

In partnership with local experts, we’ve launched a twin-track emergency response in Abyei, focused on distributing humanitarian relief and widening access to education. This approach supports both short and long-term visions for peace.

Under-resourced, Abyei is unable to cope with its growing displacement crisis. This is where our local partners vitally step in. In the coming weeks, we’ll be spotlighting their efforts to respond sensitively and urgently to the crisis.

In January 2025, the Sudanese Armed Forces recaptured Wad Madani in Sudan. This led to a resurgence of violence, which targeted civilians and set villages ablaze. Hundreds of survivors now seek refuge in Abyei where they face new challenges for survival.

HART joins 100 civil society organisations and humanitarian actors in urging the safe and dignified evacuation of civilians trapped in El Fasher in Sudan, in line with international humanitarian law. Read the joint statement in full: hart-uk.org/hart-appeals-f…
