Despite the pushback she got on her earlier FC-puff piece, Lenore Skenazy @FreeRangeKids gets it terribly wrong *again.*. This time there’s no excuse, and you have to wonder what’s really going on. nydailynews.com/2026/05/17/let…

@DrJerroldCoe @sidn1971 @HBurroughs8319 @FreeRangeKids Eventually, many slowly and quietly abandon it. The illusion is too hard to sustain over time. But so is fully confronting the illusion and going public. Easiest just to retreat, as happens ultimately with each next generation. Older RPMers are hard to find. Even Tito these days.

@DrJerroldCoe @AltB56073878 @FreeRangeKids That’s called B roll footage. If that’s the best you can do, you shouldn’t be a keyboard warrior. You’d rather look for issues than protect human rights. How are you connected to this? What’s your conflict of interest?

@HBurroughs8319 @AltB56073878 @FreeRangeKids "1000s now type independently," according to whose definition? We're told (for example) that Woody Brown can totally type independently, but for some reason we're given random strings of letters in the Today interview, as his mother calls out completely different letters ...

@HBurroughs8319 @AltB56073878 @FreeRangeKids I wonder why people would rather avoid testing than conduct it? We aren't protecting nonspeakers by unwittingly forcing a discredited mode of communication that has never demonstrated authorship. Proponents got this wrong. They have ignored the history and lessons from the 90s.

@sidn1971 @HBurroughs8319 @AltB56073878 @FreeRangeKids I ask you have you ever talked to a family ruined by this "miracle cure?" The claim of living in the past is not borne out - Soma of RPM for ex. forbids modern testing, while many modern court cases are scuttled by proponents due to the "threat" of testing ...

@DrJerroldCoe @sidn1971 @AltB56073878 @FreeRangeKids What study shows that test works? Dr Barry Prizant has 50+ years experience and his research points us in a different direction. The fact that 1000s type independently is proof it’s possible. Do you want to erase those people & their ADA rights?

@AltB56073878 There are tens of thousands of people communicating effectively using motor based methods similar to what is used in neuro rehab to help after strokes, brain injuries, ALS. Why would we deny one group supports others get without any debate?

One thing that both the FC industrial complex and the educational industrial complex have in common is an allergy to well-controlled tests (message-passing tests; academic achievement tests) that would indicate whether current practices are actually working.

@DrJerroldCoe @AltB56073878 @FreeRangeKids This feels like such an odd thing to say… Methods should evolve. 1000s now type independently. They’re human proof that with support and practice it’s possible. It’s like a ramp for people who physically can’t do stairs. ADA law exists for this very reason

@AltB56073878 @FreeRangeKids Skenazy says old school FC "fell out of favor because it looked too easy to fake," which is one hell of a way to bury the lede. She's right that current techniques have evolved to look more like the facilitated person is in control ...

@NYDNOpinions Those with delays might be swayed to say things that aren’t true. Toddlers might be influenced by their parents to say things. An interpreter might misrepresent what a non-English speaker says - but none of these groups are denied support to communicate.

@SkeptInquirer We are ORGANIZED and don’t rely on recycled controversies and studies from the 90s. Shocker we are “pulling ahead” 😅

@maryhollandnyc @SpellersFilm @CHDTVLive @ChildrensHD I couldn’t agree more Katie! Thank you for talking about the tightrope we walk! We need support that opens doors and unlocks voices, not systems that feed industry giants with default billing codes. Our loved ones with apraxia have significant challenges & significant potential.

@xanalter @xanalter thank you for giving people who are often underestimated a sense that old mindsets can shift. That there is hope. Woody’s story deserves to be elevated.. so many nonspeakers are ready to be heard ♥️

Woody Brown's remarkable debut novel "Upward Bound" captures his experience as a noverbal autistic person: “I wanted to reach neurotypical readers, the well intentioned people who don’t realize that we are the same inside." nytimes.com/2026/03/30/boo…

@bborrell 1/4 of people with communication delays do respond to traditional methods. Assumptions are made because we can’t measure what they know. I say this as a school psych who has given my share of IQ tests. Apraxia in this subset is higher.

@HBurroughs8319 It's true that some minimally verbal people do have apraxia, but most have severe cognitive problems, which limit their language skills. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, and the video I've seen of Woody leaves me unconvinced.
