Scott King "I've heard of adding a "tiger tail" to an HT to improve antenna performance, but I was a little skeptical of if it'd be worth the effort. I have a cheap QRZ-1 HT with a Signal Stick antenna, and it's worked well enough for me.
Then I saw that they're also selling a "signal strand" tiger tail that's tuned to work well with the Signal Stick antenna, and that piqued my interest in how much of a performance gain it might actually create.
I found a YouTube video (link in comments) where a guy conducted some well-thought-out testing with a couple of different HTs, a couple of other antennas, and some tiger tails. He found that if properly tuned, a tiger tail can, in fact, provide a big performance boost.
Fortunately for me and my love of DIY, Signal Stuff graciously shares their measurements on their web site! Their testing showed that a 18.5" long tiger tail paired well with the antenna I have, so I found a ring terminal that fit well, carefully modified the plastic on my HT with a Dremel, and tried it out.
I don't have ready access to an SWR meter, but there's an Echolink repeater far enough from my house to pose a bit of a challenge. I was able to listen on Echolink and confirm that with my HT + Signal Stick antenna I can get into the repeater but it's basically unintelligible.
I then added the tiger tail and while standing in the same spot and facing the same direction was able to be pretty clearly heard on the repeater via Echolink and had a brief conversation with someone who confirmed my signal sounded pretty solid on their end as well. I am truly shocked at how much better the HT performs with a simple tiger tail mod!"

The Icom IC-7300MK2 is a newly unveiled Icom HF/50/(70)MHz SDR transceiver announced at JARL Ham Fair 2025, building on the success of the popular IC-7300. Key upgrades include an HDMI port, an enhanced built-in CW decoder, a USB Type-C port with dual virtual COM ports, and improved RMDR (reduced mutual detection range) and phase noise performance, making it ideal for contesting and DX hunting.
Key Features of the IC-7300MK2
HDMI Port: For connection to external displays, enhancing operational flexibility.
Enhanced CW Decoder: A built-in decoder for Morse code transmission, improving functionality.
USB Type-C: Provides dual virtual COM ports for easier connection and operation.
Improved Performance: Offers upgraded RMDR and phase noise performance, crucial for receiving weak signals in competitive environments.
70MHz Band Operation: Includes 70MHz band operation, expanding its frequency capabilities.
Context and Purpose
Successor to the IC-7300:.The MK2 model is an updated version of the widely acclaimed IC-7300, which itself was a market leader known for its innovative RF direct sampling system and high-resolution waterfall function.
Contesting and DX Hunting:.The enhanced features, particularly the improved noise reduction and phase noise performance, are designed to give operators a significant advantage when trying to make contact with distant stations (DX) or in competitive radio events (contesting).
Digital Capabilities:.As an SDR (Software Defined Radio), the IC-7300MK2 leverages digital processing, offering advanced features and flexibility not possible in older analog designs.
