Yes. Yes. Everything your wrote. And it would not be a new approach. Some of us have always, and will always love people like Paul, whatever their identity. But at THIS fractured time, as Israel pursues its vengeance, destruction and divisive identity politics, our love for "a Paul" must be fervent and visible. Paul Berkowitz is exactly how I imagine a Jewish guy to be. Principled, forward-looking, highly intelligent and incredibly empathetic. He is diametrically the opposite of what you find coming out of Israel. We must nurture voices like this. Our society needs them more than ever.

Former hostage Maxim Herkin, who Hamas held captive for 738 days, has released a book about his time in captivity, called Coming to Light: The Captivity Diary of the Captain Who Kept a Secret. For now, the book is in Hebrew, though Herkin hopes to release an English translation as well.
Herkin, who was a captain in the IDF reserves though not on duty at the time of his capture from the Nova festival, managed to hide his military role from his captors throughout his time in captivity. Herkin and his fellow hostages managed to listen to Israeli radio using the wiring of the light fixture in their tunnel.
The book is based on the diary he secretly kept as a hostage. Herkin was finally reunited with his family, including his young daughter Monica, in October 2025.
Reading the books of former hostages and their family members is not just for our own entertainment. It is an act of bearing witness that we all have a duty to perform.

A note on the possibility of Lebanon being “included” in the agreement between the U.S. and the Islamic regime: any deal that includes Lebanon at all is a strategic failure. Lebanon and Israel are both sovereign countries that aren’t involved in these negotiations. Furthermore, the U.S. is not involved in a conflict in Lebanon. Both the U.S. and the Islamic republic are in no position to be dictating to either Lebanon OR Israel what will happen with the fight against the regime’s terror proxy Hezbollah. To include Lebanon is to tacitly accept the Islamic regime’s colonialist behavior and regional interference.
