Dr. SYLVIE WATIKUM 🇨🇲🇯🇵
Never underestimate your ability to not keep someone else’s secret. A lot of people believe: “If someone tells me something private, I would never tell anybody.” But human beings are more emotionally complicated than that. Especially when the secret involves illness, suffering, grief, or the possibility of death. Recently, I was thinking about this after seeing conversations surrounding that fact that Alexx kept his health condition extremely private until his death. And honestly… I understand it. Because once people know you are sick, everything changes. Friends who normally talk to you about football, business, gossip, work, life, suddenly begin talking to you only about your illness. Every conversation becomes: “How are you feeling?” “Did you see the doctor?” “Are you getting better?” “Have you tried this treatment?” And even though the concern comes from love, it can become emotionally exhausting for the person carrying the burden. Sometimes people do not want to spend every waking moment discussing the thing already terrifying them internally. Then there is another layer. The helplessness. When people love you and feel powerless, they often feel the need to do something. And sometimes “doing something” means sharing your situation with others: to seek advice, to seek prayers, to seek help, to seek money, to seek hope. Not from malice. From panic. From love. From desperation. But the moment private pain enters the public space, it stops belonging only to the people involved. The internet turns suffering into discussion. Discussion turns into engagement. Engagement turns into clicks. Clicks turn into money. And suddenly, the sick person becomes a public topic. This is why I have deep respect for people who choose to carry certain battles privately. Not because they are hiding. But because they understand human nature. Keeping a painful secret is not just about trusting people. It is also about understanding how fear, love, helplessness, and public attention can push even good people into making decisions you never expected.
