Joel Embiid is coming off a dominant series against Boston where he averaged 28 points per game and cleared this line in 3 of 4 games.
While his overall efficiency dipped due to struggles from three, his interior scoring remained strong, shooting 53% on two point attempts, which is very solid in a playoff setting. He has also continued to live at the free throw line, averaging 9 attempts per game and converting at an 84% rate, giving him a consistent scoring floor.
The matchup against New York sets up well. The Knicks do not have a true one on one answer for Embiid. Mitchell Robinson could see more run, but he is prone to foul trouble, especially against a physical scorer like Embiid. He’s already had success in this matchup, putting up 26 and 38 points against the Knicks while shooting an efficient 61% from the field.
From a scheme perspective, the Knicks are around league average defending key areas where Embiid thrives, including post ups, pick and roll as the roll man, and spot up situations. CJ Abrams has been one of the most reliable bats this season and continues to produce at a high level, hitting close to .300 with strong power while batting .290 against right-handed pitching.
This is not an easy matchup against Jacob Misiorowski, but the pitch profile lines up well. Misiorowski leans heavily on his fastball, throwing it around 63% of the time to left-handed hitters, which plays directly into Abrams’ strengths.
Abrams is hitting .455 against fastballs and has also handled the secondary pitches well, batting .263 against sliders and .286 against curveballs. Velocity is usually a concern in this type of matchup, but Abrams has shown he can handle it, hitting .333 against 97+ mph fastballs.
