@DJSnM I concur, the flip was the problem not the engines, that failure looks to be just a consequence of a lateral flip. SpaceX will sort that with some clever thrust deflection on top of the booster foward some.

Once it started going laterally the starship exhaust hit the grid fins and drove the booster into a roll which never stopped until it entered the atmosphere. The booster has to flip upwards so that the grid fins don't interact.

I still don't have a good explanation for why the booster flipped the wrong direction beyond the notion that it's an unstable situation and small perturbations can quickly grow in ways not planned.

I think we got to see the consequences of the lack of full blast shielding. Boostback probably would have gone fine minus one engine had this single engine, either E5 or E6, not had an energetic event and took out 16 of its neighboring engines.

@mcrs987 @JoeTegtmeyer I doubt it, more likely the aborted boost back burn was slosh enduced because the flip was way more aggressive than V2 probably because the 6 ship engines have more power now. The single engine out wasn’t a violent let go.

Color-coding the engine config according to startup/shutdown sequences REALLY shows the impact of that single engine on the entire booster. 3 other engines failed to fully light before the energetic event.

Generally, I love Starlink. It’s fast, reliable, and my husband and I run our law firm from home with it. HOWEVER- it’s monopolized internet in rural areas. Today, we received notice our internet bill is going up another $500/year. Don’t like it? Too bad. You have no other options. Nebraska gave up $300 million in federal rural internet funding for fiber because “Starlink fixed it.” This was a mistake that will cost Nebraskans dearly in the long run.
