The price we pay for associating with the wrong people is enough reason for us to be stricter about who we let into our lives

Athletes in Ghana have faced years of inadequate support, so much so that it has almost become accepted as the norm. Edwin Gadayi had to travel by bus from Kumasi to Accra to catch a last-minute flight to Botswana after a late change in the team. In a situation that required urgency, why was a quicker and more efficient arrangement, such as a domestic flight, not made. This is part of a wider pattern. In 2023, Ghana was forced to withdraw from the men’s 4x100m relay at the World Championships after two athletes picked up injuries, with no reserve available to step in. Fast forward to the recently concluded World Relays, and Ghana’s entire delegation consisted of just five people: four athletes and a coach. There was no reserve, no physiotherapist, no nutritionist, and no structured recovery team. As a result, the athletes were left to manage their own recovery, sometimes relying on support from competitors. Despite these conditions, expectations remained high, and when things previously went wrong, their concerns were often dismissed as excuses. While recent complaints have centred on travel arrangements, those issues are only a small part of a much larger problem involving preparation, planning, and athlete welfare. What makes this even more striking is the team’s continued success in spite of these challenges. Ghana’s relay squad has qualified for four consecutive World Athletics Championships and back-to-back Olympic Games. At the last World Championships, they came within fractions of a second of a podium finish while recording two of the fastest times in the nation’s history. As it stands, Ghana may be witnessing a once-in-a-generation crop of athletes, one that risks being under-supported at a critical moment. We are going to regret this sooner rather than later.
