It has come to our notice that a video is circulating on social media regarding the alleged presence of water in fuel dispensed at a Retail Outlet. The matter has been taken seriously, and an immediate investigation has been initiated. Preliminary inputs indicate that the incident coincided with a period of exceptionally heavy rainfall, during which the area was under an Orange Alert. While the exact cause is being investigated, there is no confirmation at this stage regarding the source or nature of the contamination. As a precautionary measure, the concerned Retail Outlet has been directed to undertake comprehensive checks of all underground storage tanks, dispensing equipment, and associated infrastructure. Instructions have also been issued to the dealer to intensify routine water detection checks at prescribed intervals and strictly adhere to all operating and quality control procedures. HPCL follows stringent quality assurance protocols across its retail network, including regular tank inspections, water detection tests, and product quality checks to ensure that fuel dispensed to customers conforms to prescribed specifications. Someone shared this video on Instagram from July 3. A customer refueled at this petrol pump, and shortly afterward the vehicle broke down. When the mechanic inspected it, what was supposed to be petrol reportedly turned out to be water. The customer then returned to the same pump and asked the staff to draw fuel from the same nozzle for testing. In the video, the sample collected in a transparent tube appears to be almost entirely water, which is then shown to the pump manager. The current petrol pump infrastructure was never designed to safely store high ethanol fuel blends. With the monsoon underway, even a small amount of water entering underground storage tanks can trigger phase separation, where ethanol separates from the petrol. This contaminated fuel can then reach vehicles, potentially causing severe engine damage and leaving consumers to bear costly repair bills.
