The centerpiece of the complaint is the Moura massacre of March 2022 — the worst single atrocity in the long-running conflict pitting the central Malian authorities against terrorist groups. A UN fact-finding report concluded that Malian troops and Wagner mercenaries summarily executed more than 500 people over five days in Moura during operations against an al-Qaeda-affiliated group known as Katiba Macina. On April 20, TRIAL International, the Pan African Lawyers Union, and the International Federation for Human Rights filed an application asking the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights to establish the Malian military regime’s responsibility for 2022 summary executions, rapes, enforced disappearances, torture and arbitrary detentions of civilians involving its troops and the Russian private military company Wagner Group — now rebranded as “Africa Corps.” It is the first known legal case before the Court involving a state’s use of foreign private military contractors.themoscowtimes.com/2026/04/20/civ…

HRF welcomes a landmark case filed by three international human rights groups against Mali’s military junta in Africa’s top human rights court for mass atrocities committed against civilians by Malian troops and Russian mercenaries during joint counterterrorism operations. HRF urges the court to deliver public accountability for the survivors and the families of the victims.

Iryna’s health situation requires urgent attention. In March, her sister said that her detention conditions “are deliberately bringing [her] to death.” In a February 2025 allegation letter, UN experts noted a risk “that the infection will spread further to her central nervous system and brain.”

Four years ago today, Crimean journalist, nurse, and human rights defender Iryna Danylovych was abducted by the Russian regime on her way home from work. She was held incommunicado for 13 days, tortured, and later sentenced to seven years on fabricated charges of “possession of explosives” for her reporting on repression in Crimea.
