We are excited about the Home School Graduation Recognition Act because it will clarify a confusing heading from a 1998 bill by clearly stating that homeschool grads are valid and qualified to receive student federal aid. This will fix some homeschool discrimination we have seen, primarily from vo-tech schools and cosmetology schools. This Act, known as HR 6392 in the House, unanimously passed out of the House Education Committee and unanimously passed the U.S. House of Representatives. On the Senate side, S 3747 unanimously passed out of the Senate committee on February 26 and is pending on the Senate floor. The bipartisan support this bill has received is a rare occurrence these days. Please call your U.S. Representatives to thank them for voting for this bill, and please encourage your two U.S. Senators to support this bill. hslda.org/post/homeschoo…

H.B. 5468 has passed the Connecticut General Assembly, but there is still time to prevent it from becoming law. The homeschool bill is expected to be sent to Governor Ned Lamont for his consideration. Once it reaches his desk, he can reject this harmful proposal by vetoing it. But we need to make sure he hears from Connecticut families now. Please contact Governor Lamont today and urge him to veto H.B. 5468. Learn more about the bill and how to contact the governor here: hslda.org/post/hb-5468

“Opposition to this bill is not limited to homeschool advocates. The National Coalition for Child Protection Reform has called it discriminatory and counterproductive. Its executive director, Richard Wexler, who take no position on homeschooling, warns that singling out homeschoolers for special surveillance is neither fair nor effective.” courant.com/2026/05/12/opi…

To all the homeschooling moms: You show up day after day for your kids. Some days you’re super mom. Some days you’re a mess. But most days, you’re just there with your kids. And in the end, that is what matters most: trying to connect with your kids when they are struggling. Because that’s what they’re going to remember. It’s what HSLDA attorney Will Estrada remembers. He was a very busy, hyperactive kid—and how his mom faithfully showed up for him. You don’t need to try harder. You don’t need to “mom harder.” You’re already doing it, just by being there for them. Happy Mother’s Day, HSLDA

Alert for Rhode Island homeschoolers: The House Education Committee is considering H. 8531. Please contact committee members and ask them to oppose this bill! This bill would allow local school committees to delay or deny homeschooling requests whenever they believe it is “not in the best interest of the child” or question a parent’s “competency” or “capacity” to teach. Learn more: hslda.org/post/hb-8531

Victory in Vermont! In a surprising turn of events, a last-minute amendment to restrict homeschool freedom was defeated on the floor of the Vermont Senate this morning. While we are glad that this last-minute amendment was defeated, it is a sobering reminder that threats to homeschool freedom can strike anywhere, at any time. We are incredibly grateful to Retta Dunlap at the Vermont Home Education Network (VHEN) for her work to defeat this last-minute amendment, and to the many homeschoolers who contacted their legislators with their concerns so quickly. And we will continue to monitor H930 and other similar bills for potential threats to homeschool freedom. Learn more about the defeated bill here: hslda.org/post/vt-hb-93
