@CitizenPaul4 @ServoWealth AVDV and DISV are good choices. Or if you want a total market ex-US fund with a small value tilt, DFAX is an excellent replacement for an EAFE index fund

Since 2000, you’ve seen almost 5X the growth from investing in international small value as compared to the international index. Five times! And yet the vast majority of people still invest soley based on what has the lowest expense ratios. Stop lighting your money on fire, start paying attention to asset allocation!

@aaron_lancaster @ServoWealth I watched a Ben Felix video a while back where he mentioned that even though the Nikkei index tanked, Japan’s value index still had positive returns. During our Dot Com bubble, small value stocks did well. It seems to be a theme due to fair pricing.

@ServoWealth Got it. Only thing I don’t understand is why, if there’s reason to diversify between growth & value domestically, the same doesn’t apply to international? If I was a Japanese investor in the early 80s, would the advice to invest internationally but only in small & value apply?

We’ve known for 30 years that if you’re going to invest internationally, you do it with value and small or not at all. Most investors never got the memo. (From 1996 JOF paper): “In fact, a sensible reason to diversify internationally is to "load up" on value stocks and small stocks without concentrating in one geographic region. If one does not wish to concentrate in such stocks, then international diversification for U.S. sponsors may be unnecessary.”

I just realized something today: International stocks have outperformed U.S. stocks since 2021 but no one realizes it because they’re invested in Vanguard international stock funds. Despite low (lowest) expense ratios, Vanguard international stock funds have almost all underperformed the S&P 500 (+14%/yr). Once again we learn there’s a lot more to investing than low expenses.

The name Irving Fisher is not widely known, but maybe it should be. In his day, Fisher was a renowned economist. He graduated first in his class from Yale, received the first PhD in Economics ever issued by Yale and then went on to join the school’s faculty. Despite all that, however, he is remembered mostly for making one wildly inaccurate economic prediction: On October 15, 1929 Fisher stood in front of an audience and proclaimed that stocks had reached a “permanently high” level. As we all know, however, just days later the market began a steep decline that ultimately took it down nearly 90 percent. The lesson: No matter how smart someone is, and no matter how logical an argument might sound, no one has a crystal ball.

Since the international stock resurgence starting in 2025, the “Total” International Index has only captured a fraction of the potential non-US stock outperformance. There’s more to investing than low expense ratios.

I can’t believe no one talks about this! For over 50yrs, a balanced US asset class index of large profitable growth stocks, large value stocks, and small value stocks outperformed the market by almost 3% per year! With the caveat that backtested index data doesn’t predict the future, it’s important to realize that you don’t have to outguess the market to beat the market.

@ServoWealth DFSV and DISV have been killing it lately. I’m happy to have a large tilt into them.

While the financial media seems focused on the performance of the S&P 500 Index, the DFA International Small Value Fund (DISVX) is up over 51% ytd!!! And their EMV fund DFEVX not doing too poorly either up over 28% ytd.

VT works great as a world equity fund, or 65% VTI and 35% VXUS to get close to the same spot. Don’t make it complicated. The more junk you add to a portfolio, the higher the probability you’re going to change your mind, rearrange the portfolio 1 million times, and underperform.

@ClayTravis The only reason I didn’t vote Trump in 2016 was because I lived in a red state, and as a person with libertarian leanings, Gary Johnson was my candidate of choice. I absolutely voted for Trump/Vance today because Kamala wants people to like her more than she wants to lead
