@BlairKing_ca Building the foundation of any sustainable program takes remarkable, long term commitment from a collection of passionate (or paid???) people… genuinely curious where this goes in the next 10 years.

It is both hilarious and deeply sad that we appear to be having a debate about this at my kids' school: Should we care more about 1) winning meaningless games in grade 9 girls basketball games? or 2) build the foundation of a sustainable girls basketball program at the school?

@BlairKing_ca I’m often stuck wondering if ‘something is better than nothing’ or debating ‘quality over quantity…’ The PHE teacher in me is thrilled girls have more opportunity/exposure with exhibition games… it can appeal to the recreationally motivated ones.

recognize that in BC the official leagues are Grade 8, Junior (grade 9 and 10) and Senior (grade 11 and 12). The grade 9 program plays mostly exhibition games against the Junior teams from smaller, regional schools

@dgagnon94 @caldera73028165 @GRobs_Boston 2/2 such behaviours and actions are okay… I’m really hoping Canadians can learn from this. What is consent? What isn’t? What does one say or do in such situations to stop it from continuing, even in the face of peer pressure.

@Habermaker @caldera73028165 @GRobs_Boston I’m not saying the slap didn’t happen, but I understand why the evidence was not allowed. As the players were coerced by hockey Canada under threats. Can’t really open a double standard on coercion in a case where one alleges feeling threatened and pressured to do things.

tw/ hockey canada assault trial i don’t want to spend any energy on those terrible men who deserve nothing in life, nor do i have time to explain why their acquittal will have no impact on how i feel about them (and you shouldn’t feel bad if you feel the same way).

@dgagnon94 @caldera73028165 @GRobs_Boston I also understand why some evidence was not allowed. I can appreciate that the way this trial has gone, there is insufficient evidence to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. My concern is that too many people will simply conclude with a ‘not guilty’ verdict that - 1/2

@caldera73028165 @GRobs_Boston Which actions and conversations are you referring to ? Why do you expect people who are proclaiming innocent to express remorse ? More so if they are pleading not guilty ? What was terrible ? A not guilty verdict at worst means that there’s plausible doubt, on good reason

@BlairKing_ca @LesJohnsonHrvat I understand that perspective. I also believe most young people are quite empathetic (more so than some adults) and enlightening them about a condition, with context, is a good thing.

@Habermaker @LesJohnsonHrvat Let’s get lay that game. An adult comes up to you (a child) and asks how you want to be identified. First you are intimidated, second you are crushed that a parent can’t be bothered to learn your name. Aphasia means nothing to them

Gen-X question: I have post-concussive aphasia and struggle with names. My daughter’s basketball team has players with many backgrounds. Is it okay to use clear differences to identify players (i.e., saying the Korean girl) to distinguish kids or is that culturally insensitive?

@BlairKing_ca @LesJohnsonHrvat Maybe ask each player how else they are comfortable being identified/addressed. I wear hearing aids and was sometimes referred to as “the one who wears hearing aids” 🦻I didn’t mind … and it did stop when my name was learned.

@LesJohnsonHrvat This is pre-game while they are wearing warmups. My solution over the long term is to make notes in my phone with names and numbers but we are still early in the season and names aren’t all in my phone yet. I also write down every parent’s name as soon after I hear it.

@leanne_yacyshyn Running through the freshly disced tree 🌲 field… between the rows of seedlings, with the soft dirt on the soles of me feet and through my toes! And the occasional cold 7-up… always a treat!

Here's a great 'solution' to address the gender binary in PE classes: having the two 'traditional' gendered PE classes become gender-neutral competitive and non-competitive classes. Great article on exclusion and norms of aggression in sport and PE. broadview.org/nonbinary-tran…
