@thehauscouch My kid and his friend are between 20 and 25 and they constantly complement and say they love one another because (shocker) they were raised right. Yeah, some of them are queer, but queer folks aren't a cabal of sex demons who only ever think about fkn each other.

I don’t think people realise with the Hudson situation he didn’t realise what he was walking into. At first it’s fun and jokes you think everyone is in on. He didn’t anticipate the delusion some people carry with them. He’s allowed to joke around and he’s allowed to correct

mind you part of the purpose of ao3 is to have a space to engage in fandom in your own way on a platform where anyone involved won’t stumble across it unless they’re actively seeking it out but too many people are in baby’s first fandom and do it to their faces instead 😭

Queer people recognize one another, but that's not what this is. This is mass outside-in labeling based on a handful of visible traits. Even though it’s meant playfully, it has flattened both the person and the identity being invoked into something much smaller.

Reading gender nonconformity as evidence of sexuality is back, baby! Lavender scare 2.0! I'm sure many of the folks commenting are queer as well, which makes it that much worse.

It’s worth dropping the assumption that fandom is mostly young people or that older fans are absent or out of touch. Barring any disasters (foreseen or not), you'll all be uncs soon enough.

Bottom line, a lot of fandom spaces are older than they look. Some people on AO3 and elsewhere have been in fandom since the zine days, long before the internet, and many are still active now.

I want to talk about ageism in fandoms for a minute. Because with the whole RPF discussion, it's suddenly all over my feed. First of all, the idea that generations are shaped by shared experiences (wars, economic shifts, etc.) doesn't actually mean much anymore.
