Argentina have been unconvincing for large parts of this World Cup, there's no denying that. But why do people act as if England have been any different? If we're criticizing Argentina for struggling through their wins, then England deserve the same criticism. They struggled against DR Congo, Mexico, and Norway despite being favorites, and even dropped points to Ghana in the group stage. So what exactly makes England more convincing than Argentina? I guess it's mostly because Argentina are held to higher standards as the defending champions, plus the delusional narrative that they're being helped by the refs. Other than that I don't see any other reason to make people see England as the better side in this tournament.
