@WerderEdNFL @eric_j_thompson I have no interest in watching this Superbowl. It's like the Star Spangled Yawner. Outside of Philly and KC, no one cares
English
@Randomdude50352 @TheActualMish @BriannaWu Yes, you can do that outside of college. But it's probably best if we don't leave the education of teenagers fresh out of high school up to the teenagers themselves. They probably won't be very good at it or won't do it at all, to the detriment of Western Civilization.
English

@HamptonStevens @TheActualMish @BriannaWu Yeah sure and you can do that outside of college and not blow your money…

In the Roman Empire, conquered people were free to learn higher education in subjects like engineering.
But the liberal arts were forbidden. Why?
The liberal arts are the arts of persuasion. They were the arts that could let a conquered people create an insurrection. The liberal arts are dangerous to power.
There’s a lot to critique about academia. I had a viral tweet yesterday doing it. But I also want no part of this right-wing effort to demonize liberal arts and the humanities.
The most insufferable coworkers I ever had were engineers that just studied computer science and never learned anything about human nature.

Thrilled to say I passed my viva with no corrections and am officially PhDone.

@Randomdude50352 @TheActualMish @BriannaWu Sigh.
Yeah, we're having a dick measuring contest. That's definitely what's happening here. I'm arguing that the study of art music and literature is good for its own sake so I can get you and "win."
But you beat me because you have a master's. Anything else?
English
@Randomdude50352 @TheActualMish @BriannaWu Yeah. It is. This is just a talking point. Internal, self-referrential logic.
Just go to a real campus. Talk to some actual teachers of humanities and the arts. Be in the world. What you're doing here isn't that.
English

@HamptonStevens @TheActualMish @BriannaWu It's not a stereotype, universities get grants from the federal govt, therefore they will always support left leaning/big govt arguments for funding purposes
The answer is to have higher education institutions that receive minimal or close to zero federal government funding
English
@Randomdude50352 @TheActualMish @BriannaWu Nothing you are saying connects to my experience of academia at all.
Honestly, you are literally arguing against education for it's own sake because of "socialism"? Or some weird, right-wing stereotype of college professors?
Come on, man. You seem smarter than that.
English

@HamptonStevens @TheActualMish @BriannaWu Finding meaning and happiness, which you won't get blowing all your money on college where the professor is miserable at their own existence
English
@Randomdude50352 @TheActualMish @BriannaWu Jesus, dude. You are actually arguing against reading. It's fucking bizarre. Can you truly not understand the value of learning about art, music, philosophy, and literature?
What do you think life is for?
English

@HamptonStevens @TheActualMish @BriannaWu Yes I know, the world runs on money, but keep telling us that it doesn't and then propose a socialistic solution that no one likes because it ignores human nature which will always be competitive
English
@Randomdude50352 @TheActualMish @BriannaWu Yes, I know. Education is only to make money. Universities are bad because woke. Can't have book learnin' because commies.
Great stuff, guys. Not at all self-parody.
English

@TheActualMish @HamptonStevens @BriannaWu Professors inherently want more funding for their schools and a bigger paycheck so they'll always churn out leftist figures to... Wait for it.... Increase funding and their paycheck from the govt
English
@Randomdude50352 @TheActualMish @BriannaWu Wow. There are people who got an education who aren't using it to make money. This is a disaster! Imagine learning for its own sake! Truly, civilization is at an end.
English

You want an example to back your claim up
AOC graduated from Boston University with a dual economics and international relations degree
She didn't get hired anywhere professionally, right out the gate, so she worked as a waiter/bartender and then ran for office
If she never became a politician she very well could still be a working class person (maybe she opened a bar). But the fact that they are churning out AOCs day and night is quite literally the problem. There are people out there with degrees like hers not using their degree at all!
English
@TheActualMish @Randomdude50352 @BriannaWu Ha! "I'm not going to answer your question. I'm going to name drop and insult you."
No. I will not "sit down." The idea that the creation and appreciation of the arts does not advance human civilization is the essence of philistinism. Universities are not vocational schools.
English

@HamptonStevens @Randomdude50352 @BriannaWu So you haven't read the Discourses on Livy...probably the single most important work enabling us to understand the Roman Republic and our own civilization. Sit down.
English
@TheActualMish @Randomdude50352 @BriannaWu Ah, yes. Art, music, drama, comedy, and all forms of literature — famously not advancing human civilization.
When was the last time you went a day without watching a movie, a tv show, or listening to music?
English

@Randomdude50352 @BriannaWu This is true at the most basic level. Too many people are attending college in the humanities and are failing to produce works that advance civilization. You can bash STEM but it has direct, real-world, application in the here and now.

@Luigi90Rinaldi @JoePostsStuff @reason Ummm... Okay. It's just weird to see someone commenting on the feed of a libertarian publication, confidently incorrect about what libertarians believe.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libertari….
English
@JoePostsStuff @Luigi90Rinaldi @reason Oh, yeah. That's my favorite. "I believe in small government. Also, the police should be able to beat and kill citizens with virtual impunity."
Yeah, a small government police state. Great job, guys.
English

@HamptonStevens @Luigi90Rinaldi @reason I don't knownif these people were ever truly Libertarians, but if they were they seem willing to surrender all their ideals in support of Trump and his tariffs and police immunity and Bibles in the classroom.
